HealthPod Baby 27.10.2020

I’m so honoured to be able to share this special movie screening with you. Life is so challenging right now, so I wanted to share an inspirational feature film that I know your family will enjoy. The film is called Milton’s Secret and its’ based on the book by Eckhart Tolle (author of the Power of Now). It’s a refreshing coming-of-age story of a boy who overcomes bullying, fear and anxiety. <

It’s our birthday! 14 years ago, HealthPod Baby made its debut at the Calgary Farmer’s Market. Since then it’s been shipped to five of the seven continents, and has been donated to Ronald McDonald House residents and to babies across Canada sharing the same birthday (June 10). HealthPod Baby has won three awards and helped thousands of parents stay organized with their baby’s most important health information. Thank you so much for your support over the last 14 years!

Please watch this video by Ivirlei Brookes. Her video is the reason I am sharing this post with you today. I have been quiet about the atrocity that happened with George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter protests because I didn’t know what to say and feel like a hypocrite for speaking about something I’ve never spoken about publicly and am, frankly, uneducated about. I teach my kids not to discriminate for any reason, and we talk about it, and from the depths of my heart suppo...rt and rally for every single person fighting for racial justice. But that all happens in the comfort of my home because I am scared to be called out for saying something wrong or ignorant. But I know that not saying anything is also wrong. Ivirlei has asked me as a white woman to think about how I have supported racism by ignoring it, making assumptions or staying silent. As a result of her video, I see that I have some work to do and I have a lot to learn. I look at the posts I’ve shared on this page and am truly ashamed there are hardly any pictures of racially diverse families or babies. It wasn’t a conscious choice and that is wrong. I did not seek out pictures that represent all the babies and families that are part of our community, and that’s not acceptable. I am sorry. I will continue to learn, speak up with the small voice I have and commit to doing better. I thank you for your patience and understanding while I work to improve this page. With much love and respect, Jana

How times have changed. This article from the Canadian Pediatric Society has a great list of what foods you should be introducing to your baby and in what order (they recommend introducing foods that contain iron first). When we first created HealthPod Baby, it was recommended that parents wait 2 years before introducing peanuts and now they are recommending starting even as early as 4 months-old if you baby is at a higher risk of allergies because of sibling or parents allergies. As always, check with your doctor first! Good thing we have a HealthPod in our house as we've made a few trips to the hospital because of a peanut allergy. I'm glad they are continuing to refine their recommendations. https://www.caringforkids.cps.ca//feeding_your_baby_in_the

A quick message from our family to yours First, we hope you are healthy and safe. Practicing social distancing in our homes is overwhelming and can be stressful, especially when you are responsible for teens and pre-teens who want to be social and are defaulting to their technologies or you having to keeping smaller kids busy and entertained all hours of the day. We also know that some of you have additional stress with the economic and job impacts and are worried about the... risk of COVID-19 to the health of your loved ones and friends. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your efforts and all that you are doing. We hope that within these challenges you are able to find a way to connect with loved ones and friends. and are figuring out how to take care of yourself even though that always ends up at the bottom of a long list of priorities. Wishing you all health, safety, love and inspiration.
