Everyone who buys Thunder Bay 50/50 tickets funds vital medical equipment for patients in Thunder Bay & Northwestern Ontario like this BiPAP Ventilator for patients who are in critical need in Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre's Intensive Care Unit & Emergency Department! What is a BiPAP Ventilator? Seeing someone you love have difficulty breathing is extremely worrisome. The teams in the ICU and Emergency Department are ready to help. They'll use this BiPAP Venti...lator to assist patients who suffer a sudden episode of conditions like congestive heart failure or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This machine uses positive pressure to push air into a patient's lungs, and will be used daily as front-line therapy to try to avoid having to put a tube down a patient's airway. Your support of the Thunder Bay 50/50, quite simply, allows a patient to breathe. Thank you. We'll soon be sharing even more equipment 50/50 purchasers have helped fund. Stay tuned! The take-home jackpot for April's Thunder Bay 50/50 is $279,345 and rising!! The next Early Bird draw is on April 16th, and the Grand Prize draw is on April 30th. Get your tickets at www.thunderbay5050.ca and support more vital equipment like the BiPAP Ventilator (Lottery Licence #RAF1199631)

Dr. Elrasheed Osman is the newest, and one of three vascular surgeons providing life- and limb-saving surgery closer to home for patients from across Northwestern Ontario! After graduating from the University of Khartoum in Sudan, he moved to Dublin in Ireland where he trained as a general surgeon, after being introduced to vascular surgery it was clear to Dr. Osman that this niche was where his future would be! Dr. Osman was recruited to work at Thunder Bay Regional Heal...th Sciences Centre by Dr. Yaasin Abdulrehman, a vascular surgeon who was instrumental in developing the vascular program in Northwestern Ontario. When asked about his work within our region, Dr. Osman states: There are so many people who need our help, from trauma situations, to life-threatening aneurysms to amputation avoidance. It’s a privilege to care for my patients and I am thankful to do so in a beautiful setting like we have here. Thank you Dr. Osman! Kidney stone removal surgery has a high risk of side effects because surgeons need to blast the stone to pieces with a laser. The resulting fragments can be hard to control and may get lost or lodged in the kidney. Thanks to our donors, Thunder Bay's urology program has two new devices to better control those fragments. The equipment will help reduce surgical risks and make kidney stone surgery faster, safer, and less invasive than ever before. It’s all physics. With our cur...rent machine, the laser creates a vapour bubble. When the bubble collapses, it creates turbulence, pushing the stone away, said Dr. Hazem Elmansy, a local urologist recognized as an expert in the management of kidney stones. Urologists spend a lot of time during the operation tracking down those fragments. With [the new] technology, the stone doesn’t move when we hit it with the laser." Dr. Hazem continued, "That means shorter operations, a lower risk of bleeding, and a much lower chance that we would have to operate a second time. Throughout October, Nicole from NH Designs sold Breast Cancer Awareness bracelets. What made them extra special was that for each one she sold, she made another for a chemotherapy patient at our Hospital. Her goal was to donate over 85 bracelets to beat last year's total... and this afternoon she dropped off 150! Way to go, Nicole! Karen Roberts, Manager of the Chemotherapy Unit, was on hand to accept the lovely gift. These bracelets will be given to chemotherapy patients, to help bring them HOPE.

Normally in November we'd be gathering for one of our favourite events the Resolute Save a Heart Ball. We're sad we had to miss it this year, but we're looking forward to seeing your smiling faces, whenever that may be. Until that then we need to come together virtually to keep the focus of the Resolute Save a Heart Ball front and centre. Here's a little video from Meaghan Sharp and Kent Ramsay. The message is simple:... The need for funding for our cardiovascular surgery program has not lessened. In fact, because of the worldwide pandemic, the cost of medical equipment needed for this life-saving surgery is increasing. To help get the ball rolling, Resolute Forest Products - Produits forestiers Résolu will MATCH the next $10,000 in donations to keep #OurHeartsAtHome <3 For example, a $150 donation will make a $300 impact! Donate at www.healthsciencesfoundation.ca/resolute It’s our time (still!) to bring full cardiovascular surgery to Thunder Bay & NWO.
