....because I'm out of ideas for all the glass jars I have

Healthy Blossom 14.11.2020

Fight for your Right to Party (some New Year motivation) With my Birthday being in January, a new year is, in fact, a NEW year for me. This year marks TWELVE years on my Nutrition journey. TWELVE (I can't believe I can even say that). I'm not sure how it all began exactly. I was 26, I was feeling awful and I had a suspicion it was food related. I also had no idea how to go about that and I also knew that waiting for someone else to figure it out wasn't an option anymore.... I was never one to be completely spontaneous, but the amount of time it took me to make up my mind and register for the Dietetics program at MSVU, actually move to Halifax and sit myself in on my first day of class was exactly three weeks. So I kinda knew I wanted to do this at least half bad. After completing two years at MSVU and accumulating thousands of dollars in student loans, I came to the conclusion that this wasn't what I wanted. It didn't feel right (I knew what I wanted but I had no idea how to be that, you know?) and I felt like a total idiot (as well as many other choice words I had for myself at the time). THEN, through the magic of the Universe (obviously), my connections in Halifax and working at a vegan restaurant, I was introduced to the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition. Like, what EVEN is that? A Holistic Nutritionist? Back then there were no documentaries on the Netflix or Nutrition Bloggers. Even Facebook was pretty new at the time. I didn't even know ONE Holistic Nutritionist. But I sure was curious. So guess what I did? I'll be 38 in a few weeks and I'm a Holistic Nutritionist, Owner of Healthy Blossom, a Wellbeing Counsellor at a Super Supermarket and I manage the Natural Source section in the store. Did I take the longest route ever to get here? Maybe. Or maybe I just had a few things to do along the way. But EVERY time (this is true) I thought I may just turn my back on this career an opportunity would hit me in the face. As if to say 'no way, girl! You gotta fight for your right to PARTAY!'

Winter is coming!! Yes, yes, that it is. Maybe we tend to get the blues after we are so OVER the first few pretty snow falls. And once the Holidays are over, it's really just freezing. Here's what we can do: Take a Vitamin D (this is a fat souluble Vitamin so take it with your biggest meal each day)... Skip the craptastic food. It will make you feel craptastic. Get in the GREENS. Salads aren't really what we're craving in winter, so try to add all the veggies and greens you can to your meals (chilis, soups, stirfrys, stews, quesadillas, etc). Get Out! Might as well. Walk, snowshoe at Pippy Park, have a skate at the loop, go out for a coffee and walk around downtown, get to the dog park, walk up Long's Hill to your Yoga class, whatever you can do. Keep moving. Omega 3's increase HAPPINESS - flaxseed, hemp and walnuts are just a few sources. SLEEP ZZZzzzz Keep your water intake up and.... Try this Turmeric Tea Recipe: 1 cup Almond Milk (or coconut) 1 T Coconut oil 1 T Honey 1 tsp Turmeric 1/2 tsp Cinnamon Heat on med in a small pot and whisk until it's hot enough. Enjoy while watching all of the Netflix.

It's the year of the pulses! Oh ehm gee what is she gettin' on with now? WHAT are pulses? We got this because we're probably having a few pulses already: Chickpeas, kidney beans, lentils, mung beans, dried peas and edible beans are the most common. Super good for you and here's why: Pulses contain up to 9 grams of protein per 1/2 cup cooked serving AND are high in both soluble and insoluble fibre which helps promote the good poops so we can have the good feels!... Try this recipes (inspired by the Pulse Pledge) Peanut Butter Chickpea Energy Bites (so yums) You will need: 1 can chickpeas (cooked - boil for 10 minutes - works better to mash) 1/2 cup all natural peanut butter 1/3 cup honey 1 1/4 cup oats 1/3 cup mini chocolate chips (Enjoy Life brand is excellent for this recipe) 1 tsp vanilla extract 1/2 tsp cinnamon Do It Up! Place chickpeas, peanut butter and honey in a food processor and blend until smooth. Then, add cinnamon, vanilla, oats and pulse until combined (If too dry add more peanut butter and honey. If too wet, add more oats - gradually. Pulse until it looks best kind. Add the chocolate chips and pulse until combined (again best kind). Get ready to eat: Use 1 Tablespoon to scoop a heaping scoop of cookie dough and roll into balls. Store in the fridge for 1 hour before eating. Keep refrigerated May be kept frozen for a later date too.
