Our mental health is very much affected by much stimulation we’re exposed to. Do you have a million things on your mind? Are you unable to settle a racing mind at nighttime? Lately we’ve been talking about things to relieve the mental stress of everyday life. Things like stress, anxiety, depression, PTSD, fears and phobias all stimulate one branch of the nervous system called the Sympathetic Nervous System. Every day life is filled with things that stimulate the SNS. Stress, environmental toxicants, cell phones going off, financial worry, relationship stress all these things can activate the SNS. For mental health, we rely on balance. We need ...the Parasympathetic nervous system to activate too! The PNS is stimulated (in a good way) by simple things like deep breathing, meditation, mindfulness based practice, exercise and more. We must actively engage in activities which help stimulate the PNS. Bell’s Let’s Talk Day is simply a day they pledge donations towards mental health initiatives. They pledge 5 cents for every time we use their hashtags, share/watch their videos and use their filters and frames. The goal is to spread awareness about mental health and lift the stigma associated with speaking about it. This effort must not be a one day processes and doesn’t end today.
