COVID-19: Action Plan Dear Healthy By Nature patients, In our continued efforts to participate in the appropriate measures regarding the COVID-19 situation, please consider the following questions: Have you been in contact with anyone that has been diagnosed with COVID-19?... Have you been instructed by another health care professional to self-isolate in the past 14 days? Have you traveled outside of Canada in the past 14 days? Do you have any of the following symptoms: fever, cough or shortness of breath? If you have answered YES to any of the above questions, we are requesting that you contact our clinic so that we can either reschedule your appointment (after the recommended 14 day waiting period). For your Naturopathic appointments, you can change your in-person appointment to a phone appointment. We will wave our cancellation policy fee at this time if you are unable to attend, please contact the clinic by phone or email to let us know as soon as possible. Our number one priority is the health of our patients and staff. We have increased the frequency of cleaning & sanitizing all surfaces in our space, and we have removed our toys, magazines, and our usual tea and water offerings. Osteopathic, naturopathic, and TCM treatments are an important part of many patients’ health management to help promote the optimal functioning of their body’s natural ability to heal and protect itself. It is of utmost importance to our team that Healthy By Nature remain a place that our patients can come to and have peace of mind knowing we are taking this seriously. Although our clinic is a relatively low-traffic environment, and current advice of social distancing is aimed at mass public gatherings, you can consider arriving at the clinic just a few minutes prior to your scheduled appointment, to limit the time in our common areas. We encourage the following guidelines set out by Alberta Health: To protect yourself, use good hygiene practices, such as frequent hand-washing Cover coughs and sneezes with your elbow Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands Stay at home and away from others if you are feeling ill If you have symptoms like fever, cough, or shortness of breath, please contact Health Link 811 for assessment and testing. It is our hope that these precautions will enable Healthy By Nature to stay open, healthy, and able to serve our patients well into the future. We will continue to keep you updated should the situation change. Thank you for your patience and co-operation. Sincerely, The Healthy By Nature team

Everyday stress can elicit the body's stress response and become harmful over time if too pronounced. From headaches to increasing your risk of disease, digestive problems, insomnia, back pain... (largely a result of the bad habits stress causes such as eating junk food, not getting enough sleep, and not moving enough), long-term, chronic stress wreaks havoc on both your mind and body

In the face of trauma, it's important as ever to have a strong support system and recognize the ways we can use self-care in order to heal. One of these ways, believe it or not, is through interacting with the natural world. Nature has immense healing properties for our bodies and minds, allowing reflection and self-awareness...

Sometimes we can experience some symptoms that we are not sure exactly what is causing it. In some cases, it can be caused from an imbalance in your organs Qi and Yang energies. Acupuncture is a great way to get your whole body balanced. Come in and see Laura to get a full assessment so that you can get to the bottom of the issue and get some relief. Visit www.healthybynaturecalgary.ca to get some more information and read Laura’s article Weak pelvic floor, Treat a Leaky Bladder with Acupuncture and look at the promotion that Laura is offering (until March 7th, 2020).

"After much trial and error, scientists were able to link the graying of hair to the sympathetic nerve system, which controls our responses to stressful situations. The system releases a chemical, which is then taken up by the cells that manage color regeneration. When we're stressed, this chemical process is prematurely activated, which depletes the stores of the color-giving compounds.Once they're gone, you can't regenerate pigment anymore. The damage is permanent. Finding a way to reverse the damage caused by stress on our hair isn't the primary next step of this research, as the more concerning aspect of the findings is the internal damage. Researchers do hope that this knowledge will help us understand the implications of stress on our other organs and tissues.

This Month Doctor Laura is offering a Pelvic Floor Promotion! "Are you cautious when sneezing, laughing, or when bending over to pick up heavy objects or your children? Do you struggle with incontinence and the inconveniences and stress associated with it? These setbacks can impose restrictions on your lifestyle and daily activities, but they are not untreatable. Acupuncture has the ability to help manage symptoms which are a result of leaky bladder. There are many reasons wh...y individuals may experience incontinence. Issues may arise in response to: Childbirth Surgery Chronic renal conditions Aging First off, let’s start with Chinese Medicine’s explanation of what causes these symptoms and problems to occur. In order to do that we have to take a look at both Qi and Yang energies, and understand how they influence our body’s daily functions..."

Stress and anxiety is wreaking havoc on our mental and physical health. Among the long list of health issues tied to prolonged stress and anxiety is cardiovascular diseases, major gut issues, serious prenatal concerns. The increased pressure to be "always on" comes backlash: the prioritization of time off. It may seem counterintuitive, but we now need to start accepting that downtime, is in fact, productive. Many people think they 'win the game' if they optimize their life, limit how much they need to sleep, and always push themselves, but what we're starting to learn is that it might work for a little while, but it's not sustainable long term; you will end up being less productive. The tortoise and the hare scenario has never been more apt.

Happy Heart day! "One important Osteopathic principle is that the structure and function of the body are related. If we use a wheel as an example; its structure is the tire and the rim, whereas its function is to support the car, and allow it to move by rotating. Now, with a flat tire, the structure is damaged and the function becomes impaired: it is a pretty obvious diagnosis, no need to call the mechanics for this. Now let’s say the function of your tire is altered: your wheel doesn’t turn anymore because the structure of it must be damaged, but you can’t see why. At this point, if the automobile metaphor stops and we replace it with the human body, you might need an Osteopathic Therapist to help you figure out why your body isn’t working the way it should..."

"There are a lot of factors to take into consideration before your start a Detox. During winter the best step might be to start a gradual process towards a ‘spring cleaning'. For those of you who are looking to offer your body some relief, and who want to get everything on the right track, I recommend the following: - Keep the kits and harsher detox’s for the spring time... - Dry Brushing can also be a good tool to use... - Try to use natural skin and hair care pr...oducts (or reduce the amount) to allow your skin to breathe. - Saunas can really push the organs into overdrive and force them to detox when they aren’t ready. You may want to only stay the time you normally would... - Remember that if you integrate physical activity into your life correctly and if you keep in mind that this is a time of conserving energy, you will be less likely to hurt yourself and get discouraged... - Eating warming foods is important... - Everyone seems to see shakes and salad’s as a fresh and a healthy thing. But I’ve had to switch many of my patients off them. They are just too cold for the body. - Look at the latest dirty dozen from the environmental working group, these are the top 12 foods that are the highest in pesticides and affect us the most. Please buy these ones organic! They also have the clean fifteen. These foods do not need to be bought organic. - Consider doing a social media, phone or screen time detox so that you can get more in touch with yourself and what you need. You can help your circadian rhythm reset by avoiding that blue light before bed to help you sleep." Read Dr. Greg's full article on the link, and have a look at his personalized Detox offer!

Let’s start off with what a Detox looks like. There’s a lot of misconceptions (or generalizations) out therewhen most people hear the word detox they think of something extreme like being on the toilet for a day or two after taking pills/powders, or something like the master cleanse where you’re forced to solely survive on maple syrup, lemon and cayenne pepper for a couple days. It may offer some relief for you to hear that not all detoxes are like this! Even with that in ...mind, some of you may be asking why detox at all? Isn’t our body already detoxing all the time? That’s a good question. Our body is always working. Sweating, for example, is a process that is happening all the time and does help to cleanse the body. But it is important to take into consideration that, in today’s day and age, we have a higher exposure to toxins like: - Plastics and heavy metals affecting our endocrine system - Pesticides affecting our gut - Stress pulling us away from our rest and digest phase (parasympathetic nervous system) - Carcinogenic materials - Perhaps (at this time of year) overindulgence from the holidays. All these factors affect how our hormones work, how we deal with stress and potentially our body’s susceptibility to develop diseases like Alzheimer’s, heart issues or metabolic syndromes down the road. So, if you have the ability to help your body work a little better, it can be an immense help! Some intense cleanses can really help kick start a body into gear, but there are also others that put too pressure much on the body and can cause harm. So, it is really important to be mindful of how the dietary changes you are implementing can affect your overall health and your day to day life in general....

" When was the last time you were sick? When you realized it, do you remember what your first thought was? Did you think oh no!! Not now! I don’t have time for this! or Not again!are you kidding me!? Did you run to the pharmacy to get the strongest thing that could get you better as fast as possible in an effort to free yourself from the curse? Consider this: what if being sick wasn’t a punishment? What if instead we looked at it and wondered what did I do to get in the way of my inherent capacity to heal? ..."
