With my deepest appreciation for the feedback from colleagues after the 2nd acne online summit hosted in Buenos Aires yesterday. When we lead from the heart, we can make a difference in the journey of those entrusting us, our patients. #dermatologist #dermatologists
Can a diet of processed foods and sugar worsen acne? Yes, 3 research studies have shown that what we eat can improve acne. Initially developed for diabetics, low glycemic index diets can help so many conditions beyond diabetes. #acnespecialist #acnefood #lowglycemicindex #acnetreatment

Mask Issues: Unmasked!! Common skin issues related to use of facial masks include maskne (acne), maskdents (indentations), and maskzema (eczema). (Neologisms brought to you by the healthy minds at the Healthy Image. ) Pimples from facial masks may be due to skin irritation and inflammation leading from the pores from oil glands to the skin surface. This is particularly a problem at sites of pressure and friction, such as straps and mask edges. Skin indentations at strap...s and snaps can also develop at these sites. Beware that prolonged pressure can lead to long-term indents (thus, maskdents). Solution: Straps and edges should be adjusted to avoid being too loose or too tight. Move snaps away from direct skin contact when possible. Low friction fabrics at edges like silk or velvet may help. Irritation or allergic reactions due to mask fabric or to cleansers may cause itching and irritation, called eczema. Solution: Change fabric materials, ensure proper fit with a muzzle profile to provide more room under the mask. Cleanse regularly with fragrance free detergents. Skin care tips: Use gentle cleansers and non-comedogenic moisturizers to help repair chafed, irritated skin. For pimples, using dandruff shampoo as a facial cleanser 1-2 times/week can help. If you need further guidance, call us for more information on options to help.
Hope you all enjoyed a safe, healthy, and happy Canada Day (and wore your hats and sunscreen)! Heres to a better second half of 2020

In dermatology, we recognize multiple shades of skin colour: each special and unique. But skin colour is just pigmentation. It does not define us. Beyond the surface are hopes, dreams, aspirations, yearnings for better health, better lives, opportunities and justice.

An IPL photofacial is a great option for treating hyperpigmentation such as lentigines, most commonly known as sun spots, usually found on your face, chest and hands. As an added bonus, it can also reduce skin redness and blood vessel marks. IPL uses Intense Pulsed Light to penetrate below the surface of your skin to breakdown pigment into small particles. These particles then travel to the surface of your skin as scabs and slough off within a week. The amount of t...reatments you will need depends on the amount of sun damage you have. For best results, we suggest getting 3-4 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart. Happy Valentines Day from Dr. Jerry Tan and the staff at Healthy Image What are your plans this Valentines Day? #valentines #healthyimage #cosmetics #dermatology
Sun protection does not mean sunblock. Sun protection also does not mean sun avoidance. Being outdoors for work or leisure is an important component of daily human activities but tanning is a signal that the skin has been injured by UV light. In those with hyperpigmentation, sun exposure can worsen the condition and make it more resistant to treatment. ... How to sun protect? Sun protection refers to UV protection including avoidance of unnecessary sun exposure on bare skin. The following are important components of sun protection: 1. Hats with brims 2. Appropriate clothing 3. Sunglasses with UV rating 400 or higher 4. Sunblock with minimum SPF 30; labeled for UVA and UVB protection; containing zinc or titanium dioxide 5. Avoidance of times of day when the UV index is maximal( eg. 10 am to 4 pm) See more

Hyperpigmentation is a common condition of patchy skin darkening. This includes age and sun spots, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation from acne and other conditions causing skin inflammation, melasma, certain medications, and internal diseases. Diagnosis is usually straightforward for most cases. Since hyperpigmentation may be unsightly and bothersome, many will seek treatment. These can start from avoidance of trigger factors, good skin care including sunprotection. ... Next are use of fading creams then procedures including facials, photofacials and laser therapy. Best options will depend on the type of hyperpigmentation. Over the next few weeks, Dr. Tan will be discussing hyperpigmentation: causes, prevention and treatment.
