Yin/Yang sphere - part 1

Heart of Stone 25.11.2020

A couple of weeks ago I carved this little bear in increments of an hour or two while the kids were walking the dogs. I finally got around to polishing him up ...this evening :) It never fails to amaze me how much I enjoy the "reveal" when I get to see how beautiful the stone is, EVERY. SINGLE. TIME! Never get tired of it... And also how very satisfying it is to hold a finished piece in your hands, how it feels, the weight of it, just everything! *sigh* *joy!* See more

Okay, so I reworked the last soapstone sculpture I did (I was just not happy with it, and felt it needed some changes) I changed the shell, reworked the hair a little, and brought out the hand holding the shell so it's more noticeable. I do feel a lot happier with it now! :)

I finished this one yesterday. While I was working on the one I did last week, I had this idea for another one, still playing with the same idea, but much more... stylized, abstract. I wanted the shape of the woman to be an echo of the shape of the shell. I was really excited by the idea, but looking at the finished piece, I don't feel like I achieved my vision. Like there's too much shell and not enough woman... something about the way her arms and hands didn't come through enough either. I'll have to spend some time thinking about it and revisit this I think. The stone is quite lovely, there is such subtle and delicate veining and colour variation between the beige and green. In some spots it almost looks like wood-grain. See more

Hooooooooo! that feels good to get my tools into some stone again! Just finished this one tonight. The stone is really beautiful! I love how it changes to ...that gorgeous sea-green colour. It almost looks like as she's hearing the sound of the sea in the shell it's starting to affect how she feels and it's moving down from her head to rest of her body... I have some days off here over the Easter break, and my head is full of ideas for new carvings so look out! The soapstone dust will be flying! See more
