Happy First Day of Spring!
The whole house is full of seedlings and the time has come to get the propagation house warmed up and move these babes outside! (We hold off heating the greenhouse as long as we can to save $, but the forecast is looking decent- and we re gonna go for it!). Some of our cold hardy varieties have been planted in the (unheated) hoophouse already, and this week and we will also begin the process of waking up hundreds and hundreds of Dahlia tubers. Its going to be a busy week but we love this time of year!!!!
One of our favorites from the garden. This is Eryngium. Also known as 'Sea Holly'. It is a herbaceous perennial that thrives in full sun and sandy soils. SeaHolly symbolizes 'Independance' and 'attraction' and many species of Eryngium have been used in herbal medicine and also as a food source. ... We love this plant for its large umbels of prickly, thistle -like flowers in shimmery silvers, steely blues and purples. It has great form and texture for use in landscaping, as well as floral design and can be used fresh or dried! We are adding a new purple variety to the mix this year and we cant wait to share them all with you! #sicamousflowerfarmer #sicamousflowers #sicamousflorist #sicamousflowerfarm #sicamouslocal #shuswapflowers #shuswapflowerfarm #shuswapflowerfarmer #farmher #shuswapflorist #grownnotflown #localflowers #eryngium #seaholly
I just cant wait for those sunny, early morning harvests... Daydreaming about summer today
The sweetest little helper Throwback to a simpler time. We all lived a little closer, we got to see each other whenever we wanted, life was a little easier back then and the sun was shining. Time flies and you never know what the future holds. Be grateful for today... Spread the love Photo credit: @jessicaannenolan Jr Designer/Garden assistant/Model: Rosie @jennifermakayev
If snowflakes were flowers
We 've been experimenting this year with season extension methods and Im hoping to have blooms earlier than ever this spring! Heres my attempt at some low tunnels made using frost blanket. You can also use plastic, shade cloth or bug netting to cover the hoops (depending on what your goal is). These will protect early season crops from the cold and give them a bit of a head start this season. When temps dip, I can just close it up like a curtain on top and when its nice, it gets opened up for optimal light penetration and air flow.
Goodmorning flowers lovers! We are so excited to be adding a few new varieties of Dahlias to our collection this Spring! We can't wait to share them with you all! Follow along for more exciting farm updates that are in the works.
Ive been dividing Dahlias for days but I can finally see the end!! Some gardeners leave theirs until the spring to clean and divide. Since Spring is such a busy time around here already, I always like to get mine done in the fall. It saves a ton of winter storage space doing it this way too!
