Tick season has come early in Alberta this year! On Friday we had our first tick of the year brought into the clinic off a client’s dog. It is important to note that this dog has NOT left Airdrie or done any recent hiking/travelling. While tick bites do not cause health problems on their own, certain species of ticks can transmit Lyme disease. It is important to remove ticks off your pet as soon as possible as it often takes 36-48 hours for the Lyme Disease bacterium to be tr...ansferred. If you find a tick on your pet, you can bring them into Heartland and we can remove it for you. If you try to remove the tick yourself, take care to pull the tick straight up off the skin without squeezing or twisting it. Using tweezers, grasp the head/mouth as close to your pet’s skin as possible. DO NOT apply matches or petroleum jelly to the tick. Alberta Health offers free tick testing to check for Lyme disease. You can bring the tick into our clinic in a clean, dry container and we can submit for you. Flea and tick prevention products are available in clinic. Please call or email with any questions.
