It is true that the filter will help the quality of the inside air by removing dust, hair and other particulates from the air circulation BUT more importantly, it preserves the life of your furnace. How filters are rated Filters are rated using MERV ratings (minimum efficiency reporting value). The higher the rating, the better the filtration BUT there can be a cost. It requires more force to move the air through a high rated filter and therefore, the furnace must work much harder. An average home filter should have a MERV rating of 8-12. You may wish to consult your furnace manufacturer’s recommendations. If you are purchasing a filter that records a rating other than MERV, ask for a compatibility chart.
