Sometimes Facebook memories are interesting on second reflection. This was an article on the connection between the spleen & brain in anxiety and keeping you stuck. The spleen also has other roles according to TCM; a central role in digestion, controls blood, helps create Qi, controls the muscles of the limbs, houses thought and short term memory. So what? Well in the era of covid with rising levels of stress & anxiety we can and must support our spleen.... 1. Watch the amount of sugar you consume: it weakens the immune system & creates inflammation. 2. Get some exercise daily: what that looks like will vary and don’t overdo if you’re tired. You can start by walking a block, we have great pathways many are cleared in the winter or get spikes for your shoes. In a pinch set up a circuit in your house in one room do plank, in another, wall sit, tricep dips etc. I have an app on my phone called 7 minute work out that I’ve even managed all the exercises in a small hotel room. I’ll ask you yoga teachers to make a short video clip of basic or modified Sun Salutation and post it 3. Meditate, deep breathing or download some guided imagery, it at least temporarily changes your mental state. I’ve used the ones from Health Journeys since they were on cassette tape & I had to flip the tape. They have titles for sleep, stress, wellness and many others. 4. Simple, unprocessed food. Break out those crockpots and make stews and soups. Share recipes you like with friends and below. 5. Change your mind, now before you roll your eyes let me explain. As we age we fall into grooves, born out of habits developed from tendencies. Challenge those: sit in a different spot then your usual chair, try typing on your phone or put the dishes away with your non dominant hand, take a different route on your walk. When I used to teach yoga I’d make people change the way they interlaced their fingers trust me you typically only do that one way, switch which finger is on top. The idea is to encourage some mental flexibility and remind us we can at least consider changing our mind if only temporarily. I’m happy to help you find individual ways to support your spleens and as always to refer you to other professionals if you need more mental health support.

In addition to these for Covid disinfection I use Benefect Decon 30 a Thymol based cleaner (read way less toxic and still on Health Canada list) Jenn is also a talented yoga teacher and who couldn’t use a bit of that!
