SELF IUD REMOVAL . This is one of my favorite kinds of messages: a client of mine (the amazing @dorothyzittel) trusting themselves and their intuitive knowled...ge of their body and removing their own IUD! I gave this client the option of removing it themselves or coming to me for an appointment, and they decided to do it themselves. . How do you remove an IUD? If you’re in a provider’s office they’ll place a speculum to see the cervix, and then use a ring forceps (like a long tweezer) to grab the IUD strings and pull the IUD out in one swift motion. . If you’re removing your own, get in a comfortable position where you can reach the strings that hang out of your cervix. This might be reclining on a bed, sitting on the toilet, standing with one foot up on the edge of the tub, squatting, etc. Search first for your cervix (feels like a hotdog end usually) and then look for the divot, the little indent in the middle which is the opening to the uterus. That’s where the strings come out. Once you find the strings, grasp them firmly between two fingers and pull firmly & steadily. It’s good to do it with a quick yank, but not necessary. . Reasons to get you IUD removed by a provider: - you don’t feel comfortable with it - you can’t find the strings - the strings are too short to grasp - you feel significant pain as you put pressure on the strings . #diyGYN #AtHomeGynecology #midwifery #consent #holistichealth #iud #iudRemoval #birth #pregnancy #homebirth See more

I have come to realise that questions about vitamin K and the newborn can often be best answered by telling what I have come to call vitamin K stories. Or, the ...stories behind the evidence. Why do we not have better evidence on the most effective dose of oral vitamin K? Because it hasn’t been a research priority, and so we can only guess that is it somewhere between the dose that was shown to be effective and the dose that was shown to not be effective enough. Why don’t we have more evidence on possible alternatives? Perhaps because those who fund research find it difficult to see outside their own belief. ‘It works and improves short-term physical outcomes, so let’s give it to everyone’. Why do we still see so many websites which tell women that babies who had instrumental births are at higher risk of VKDB? Because that was what we thought at one time, but when we checked it out, we found that wasn’t the case, but unfortunately that news didn’t get around so lots of people are still giving out-of-date information. So many stories. So much that we can learn about the wider context of our knowledge, if we are open to that. I've written about researching vitamin K in my blog post today. You can read it at https://www.sarawickham.com//vitamin-k-the-stories-behind/ #midwife #midwifery #pregnancy #birth #doula #childbirth #childbirtheducation #birtheducator #birthdecisions #studentmidwife #childbirtheducator #drsarawickham #writersofinstagram #informedconsent #informedchoice #whatsrightforme #positivebirth #vitamink #vitaminkandthenewborn See more

DH @nathanstogryn and the boys are out building a snowman and then a shelter in the woods, so I'm taking advantage of the undisturbed time to whip up herbals. Easy Does It Balm first, Belly Balm next, and we'll see if I still have time for more after that. You'll notice the tube on the right is a bit darker than the others. There was a wee bit of oil leftover in this batch so I topped it up with a touch more beeswax and a part bottle of medical THC oil that wasn't a good fit... for me for consumption. I now have an awesome herbal cannabis balm for personal home use. Easy Does It is a premium herbal infused balm for all ages, in a twist-up tube for easy application designed for topical cosmetic use after a hard day of work, when you've "overdone it" at the gym or in the garden, when your kiddo has growing pains, or anytime tissues need a little tlc. Easy Does It Balm is a truly gentle cosmetic balm with no essential oils or pharmaceuticals, and no zip, zap, or tingle like you experience with traditional icy-hot products. Easy Does It can even be used on broken or irritated skin, on kids, during pregnancy, or while breastfeeding. East Does It Balm is made with calendula, goldenrod, and yarrow infused sunflower oil, jojoba oil, and beeswax. Well, this post is bound to upset some folks. I’ve already lost several friends and colleagues since March regarding this discussion. Easy answers are rarely a...nswers. No one is talking about strengthening immune function No one is talking about diet and lifestyle If you make these statements- you haven’t been listening and are demonstrating how little experience you have with the complexities of health and wellness. Diet is a contributing factor for health and wellness. Lifestyle is a contributing factor. Stress is the most powerful contributing factor and is linked to the vast majority of illness and doctors visits in the US. So, when We talk about racial injustice- We are speaking about immune function. And when We talk about minimum wage and access to health care We are talking about immune function. And when We say We want people provided with funds so that they can close up shop or not labor or not rush to work or not put themselves at risk to make ends meet during a global pandemic- We are also talking about immune function. Lifestyle change is hard. It is also complicated by outside factors like finances, occupation, culture, geography and time. Most of us involved in wellness and medicine are well aware of this. We regularly offer health education and we also understand that people don’t always take action for complex reasons. If you are sitting at home, able to make ends meet and have access to healthful foods and supplements and have time to practice stress reducing lifestyle but do not recognize that lifestyle isn’t accessible to everyone and won’t be for several generations even with concentrated efforts- then you are not speaking about immune function when you make suggestions about collective wellbeing based on your personal experiences. A quick google search will help you find your local organizations who are on the ground supporting collective wellbeing through health education, food access, anti-racism training, health care for all, environmental education, coaching and therapy- lots of folks are talking about immune function and healthful lifestyle and have been for a very long time.

I did it! I made gluten-free dairy-free pastry from scratch for currant squares! They hold together and they are delicious. Currant squares are a Stanford family Christmas morning tradition but we skipped them last year because we were newly gf df and pastry felt like too much of a challenge. We bumped them to New Years Day this year so I would have more time to make my first attempt at the pastry and I am so glad we did. Turns out this recipe is easy peasy (or as Lutka would say "It's easy as oranges!") and the beauty of a gf pastry is you don't have to worry about overworking it and making it tough. I used this recipe (see comments) and sub'd becel unsalted plant-based sticks for the unsalted butter. #housewitch #kitchenwitch #glutenfree #dairyfree #currantsquares #Britishroots #traditions #NewYear2021 #madefromscratch #madewithlove
