Recently personal historian Cory Bretz was asked how he got into genealogy. Here's what he said, "I got interested in genealogy as a byproduct of making life story family history films. I've always been keenly interested in how people choose to live their lives, their values, relationships, and actions in the world. After my grandmother, grandfathers and mom died I realized I'd already lost a huge chunk of family history stories and tradition. So I interviewed my one remain...ing grandmother. I so loved that interview process and the resulting video that I started to offer this interview process to other elders around me which led me to becoming a professional personal historian and launch my business Heirloom Films and Storybooks. Inevitably it became obvious that I needed to delve into genealogy in order to be able to illustrate the characters in my client's family history stories. So I've become a bit of a closet genealogy addict. My immediate goals are usually to create family tree chart visuals for films and books. My longer and more time consuming predilection is using DNA to find 4th, 5th, and 6th cousins who might have inherited more of the older family history items like old photos, family bibles, and various records. I was so thrilled to reconnect with a misplaced 4th cousin (using DNA) who was able to fill me in a missing leg of my own family history. I suppose there's worser addictions?"
