Renovation projects are fun design challenges and often the existing bones are wonderful. Restraint is often times the hardest aspect. In the renovation of this mid-century modern home, we opened up the kitchen and refreshed finishes. The small changes made significant impact. When balancing project priorities and wants on a tight budget, asking this question, scale of change versus return in impact, is a good measuring tool.... Architecture often needs to step back and act simply as an aperture to what is already beautiful. This is one of our favourite spaces in the H house addition. The contemplative office space for a retired surgeon expands to a sheltered outdoor space. When days are cooler, the glazed doors are closed but the visual connection remains.
