Something very special took place last Wednesday as each and every resident at the Hellenic Home for the Aged received their Christmas Gift baskets. Thanks to all of your donations, made in support of the HHF Next Generation Committee’s Giving Tuesday fundraising drive, we were able to support our seniors this holiday season. Though we can't be together this year, the HHF is still working to keep various community initiatives running. One such worthy project is the Canadian Institute in Greece (CIG) and we're pleased to announce a funding commitment of $75,000 towards the construction of the Institute’s new home in Athens. Like the Hellenic Heritage Foundation, the Canadian Institute i...n Greece (CIG) is a charitable, non-profit organization with a mission to preserve, promote and advance Hellenic education, culture and heritage. In Canada, the CIG sponsors a biennial graduate student conference and promotes Canadian research and education in Ancient, Byzantine and Modern Greece through academic events and lectures. In Greece, the Institute hosts a number of lectures and cultural events throughout the year, including academic talks by Canadian scholars. Through this investment, the HHF will look to build on existing synergies and collaborations through our study abroad programs in Greece available at both York University and the University of Toronto. The CIG hosts students participating in study tours of Greece and also offers a variety of fellowships, internships, and travel bursaries to Canadian undergraduate and graduate students for research in any aspect of Hellenic studies and in any academic discipline. The CIG internships programme can serve York students and Modern Greek Studies students in particular, as it provides free accommodation for a three-month stay in Athens where our graduate students can conduct their research in a very affordable way and undergraduates can acquire very valuable experience as interns working on the CIG Library and other institution’s needs. In addition, the CIG is expanding its range of activities and is in line with the HHF Chair’ mission to maintain a bridge of scholars, students and researchers with Greece, and make the most of the CIG, a ‘second-home’ for Canadian students while they spent part of their studies, whether taking a summer course or conducting their research in Greece. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to unfold, we are deeply concerned for the health and well-being of our local communities as well as the health and safety of our members, friends, supporters and their families. In our own effort to flatten the curve, the HHF is cancelling or postponing all events scheduled this spring including the Next-Gen Spring Social on April 11 and the Blue and White Gala on June 5th. Instead, we are turning our immediate attention to support our loca...l community partners to deal with the needs and challenges posed by the coronavirus threat. There are many in our community, such as the elderly and other vulnerable individuals, who need our help now more than ever. We have reached out to local partners, such as the Hellenic Home for the Aged, to offer our assistance and support. We urge you to help in any way you can. We also recently launched an innovative online Greek Language Education Portal at www.GreekLanguage.ca which is currently proving invaluable to many families and Greek language programs, helping bridge the gap for students without classroom instruction. It’s a great place to all of us to explore ways we can brush up on our Greek. We will follow up with more news about GreekLanguage.ca in the months ahead. Attention Convention Attendees: We have been closely monitoring the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak for the past couple weeks, and have been in di...rect communication with students and professionals from Toronto and various regions of the United States. We take great pride in offering bi-annual conventions, bring many of you to new cities to meet other students and young professionals, be inspired, and learn from great speakers and mentors. Of paramount importance, however, is the safety and health of all attendees and the community at large. Therefore, we have decided to postpone the upcoming Toronto Convention until the Fall of 2020. We look forward to continue working with our local planning committee, local HSA leaders, speakers, mentors and sponsors for the Fall Toronto Convention. A specific date will be announced in the coming days. The HHF Next Generation Committee is pleased to present Gina Alexandris as moderator of its inaugural HHF Talk: Making Your Mark on February 20th. Gina is the Senior Program Director of Ryerson’s Law Practice Program. Gina has also been actively involved as a Senior Advisor with the development and upcoming launch of Ryerson’s new innovative law school. Prior to joining Ryerson University, Gina developed and directed the award-winning Internationally Trained Lawyers Program ...at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Law. Between 2013 and 2014, Gina was the Director, Strategic Planning and Knowledge Management for the Legal Services Division of the Ministry of the Attorney General of Ontario. Gina sits on the Advisory Board Committee of Young Women in Law (YWL) and serves as an Honorary Board Member for the Hellenic Canadian Lawyers Association (HCLA).
