Hello Sleep 08.05.2021

A fun exercise to try with your toddler prior to beginning a new sleep routine is to have them practice putting everyone to sleep. Make a game of it. Have them make beds for their teddys or dolls and practice putting them to bed. Have them put Mom and Dad to sleep as well. Also, run through a practice routine with your toddler and include phrases like lay down be still and wait for sleep to come. Make it fun and emphasize that you are all practicing going to bed. Practicing helps prime the behaviour for bedtime!

I recommend using white noise whenever your child sleeps! Ensure that the machine or fan has a consistent flat sound and that it can continue on all through the night. A machine that turns off after a set time can actually wake children up. Avoid sounds of waves, birds, thunder or whales. ... Set the decibel level where your child’s head will be to no more than 50dB - there are many free decibel meter apps like Decibel X - or if you don’t have access to a smart phone you can think of it as being about as loud as a shower. I am a big fan of the Dohm white noise machine rave me your favourites in the comments!!

Toddlers thrive on clarity and consistency. When we prepare children for what to expect, they are more easily able to adapt to a transition to a new way of doing things. Explain to your child that you will be helping her learn to fall asleep in a new way. Give her the information during the awake hours to avoid getting into a back and forth at bedtime Talk to your toddler about laying down quietly and waiting for sleep to come. Let them know exactly what to expect; tha...t they will say goodnight to Dad, have one book and two stories with Mom in their bedroom outside the bed and that they will then get into bed and Mom will give a hug and a kiss and say goodnight. Set a clear and kind boundary for how you will respond after the routine is complete and then stick to it. Avoid intermittent reinforcement at all cost. #toddlersleep #vancouversleepconsultant #toddlersleepconsultant #momlife #sleepconsulting #motherhood #hellosleep #childsleep #babysleep

"Working with Katie was one of the best parenting decisions my husband and I have made for our family. When we contracted Katie our daughter was waking multiple times during the night and insisting on being nursed back to sleep. We had struggled with our older son's sleep as well, so it had been years of sleepless nights. I was completely exhausted and scheduled to go back to work in a month. I had tried many strategies and read everything I could get my hands on, but nothing... worked. Initially, I was skeptical of working with a sleep consultant, as I thought I would just be told to let her cry it out. This was the experience of many families I'd spoken with. Katie's approach was different. She took into account many factors, including our parenting style and our daughter's unique health needs, and developed a custom plan. We discussed the sleep environment, schedule, nutrition, and other components I hadn't even considered. In the end, there was some crying, but I truly believe that Katie's plan set us up for success and she was there to support us every step of the way. After two weeks, our entire family was regularly sleeping through the night! It has made an enormously positive impact on our lives; I now have the energy to be a better person and parent. My only regret is not calling Katie sooner!" Do you know that your toddlers sleep environment really matters? The environment that children sleep in has significant impact on how well and how long they sleep. Create an environment that is as dark and calm as possible. Ensure the bed has minimal blankets, pillows, and stuffed animals in it. ... Keep the temperature in the room on the cooler side the best you can. Keep the space simple, it doesn't need to just be a bed, but less in the room is a better sleep environment. Taking these simple steps can help make sure your child is in an ideal sleep environment and having better sleeps. #momlife #toddlersleep #vancouversleepconsulting #sleepconsulting #toddlersleepconsulting #motherhood #hellosleep #childsleep #babysleep
