Good News: the BC government has officially declared that veterinary clinics are an essential business. We will still be open 7 days a week for your pet's needs. We're open weekdays 8am - 3pm, and weekends 9am - 3pm. It's great news that we won't have to be closing, but please keep in mind that with a short number of staff and a high volume of food and medication orders, we ask for your patience as we try and get your pet's items as soon as we can.

Some more info on the spread of this virus. The latest update today is the Annis Island (in Vancouver) rabbits have been confirmed positive for the virus.
Given the recent concerns about the re-emergence of Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease on Vancouver Island, Dr. Kwan has an important message for all bunny owners! There is currently an outbreak of Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease (RHD) type 2 in Nanaimo. The first cases were diagnosed at the beginning of March. A Second outbreak has occurred last week and is confirmed to be RHD type 2. RHD is caused by a Calicivirus. It is highly contagious and lethal in rabbits. This disease ONLY affec...ts rabbits. There is no threat to humans and other animals including dogs and cats. All rabbit owners should take precautions against the disease. Strict quarantine is recommended and ideally rabbits should be kept indoors if possible. This virus can be spread via direct contact with live or dead rabbits. Also, fomites contaminated food, bedding, water, as well as insects, birds and mammals- can transmit the virus over long distances. There is no vaccine available in Canada or the USA. There are vaccines available in Europe for Type 1 and/or Type 2 strains. In particular, we have sourced out a vaccine that will treat Type 2 RHD in France. The procedure to obtain the vaccine here is to apply for an Emergency Drugs Release from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. Unfortunately, the approval and shipment process could take weeks or months. The CFIA may or may not approve the vaccine for use in Canada. We have not applied for the Emergency Drug Release as we are awaiting the final results of DNA sequencing of the virus by the federal government. Sequencing will help determine if the vaccine will be effective or not. The vaccine also has some side effects and may not fully prevent the spread of the disease, but rather improve the chance of survival. The best advice at this time is to have strict quarantine procedures. We have posted some information on the disease and quarantine procedures. Dr. Tin Wai Kwan See more
