If you have been following our instagram (@rlmwellness) you may have seen our inquiry about Andy Frisella's challenge 75 HARD. For those of you who do not know, 75 HARD is a challenge that lasts 75 days. Every day you must complete 6 tasks and if you fail, you must start over again from day 1. After surveying what people thought about the program we came to understand that many people have been intrigued by the program due to its supposed positive effect on mental health, wi...llpower, and discipline - but the intensity and unsustainability of the program has been a deterrent. What happens to your brain when you engage in a coaching session? Our brains are complex! They are made up of an estimated 100 billion neurons and 100 TRILLION neural connections. These connections are formed when you practice a skill, have an experience, recall a memory, etc. The cool thing about these pathways is that they are not permanent! Your brain is being changed every day with every experience, thought, and behaviour. This is what is referred to as neural plasticity.... When you are in a coaching session, you are taking the time to actively explore and rewire your brain. Here are just a few ways we work with the brain to achieve this: 1. Experience: the mere act of engaging in a coaching session serves as a practice of bringing consciousness and awareness to our physiology, our reactions, our needs, our beliefs & values, and our culture & upbringing. This can give us more understanding and control when we encounter new experiences and situations. 2. Memories: Our memories are imperfect. Every time we recall a memory, it rewrites itself based on the context in which it was remembered. Taking the time in session to recall and explore memories allows us to use them to your advantage rather than hold you back. 3. Visualization: Have you ever woken up from a bad dream feeling sad or angry? Even though it was a dream, it was hard to shake that feeling right? That is because imagining and doing are the same to your brain! In coaching, we learn to use mental imagery (visualization) to plan, regulate emotions, and even speed up the learning of new skills.
