Leukemia is the deadliest blood cancer of its kind. Based on rates from 2007-2009, 1.35% of men and women born today will be diagnosed with leukemia at some time during their lifetime. From 1991 to 1994, the incidence rate was 139 cases per million children under five and the rate is increasing by 1to 2% per year between 1977 and 1995. Ionizing radiation x-rays, pesticide in food, electric and magnetic fields Chemicals, specifically benzene derivative aromatic items like cosm...etic perfume, have been shown the cause of leukemia. A leukemia patient initially treated by chemotherapy but it helps a patient to survive up to 2 years. Stem cell transplant is the ultimate remedy for the survival of a leukemia patient. We have some patents in our Bangladeshi community who are diagnosed by leukemia and presently undergoing intensive chemotherapy treatment and some of them are in need of stem cell transplant for their survival. You can save the life of leukemia patients by donating stem cells. This stem cell normally matches within the siblings (possibility of matching is 25% of each sibling). So patient has to rely greatly on unrelated donor and that must be match within the same ETHNIC background. This matching is really rare in nature. OneMatch is the responsible government organization to collect stem cell donor. Disharee, a volunteer organization jointly working with OneMatch in Bangladeshi community with your support to maximize the number of stem cell donor from our Bangladeshi community for our own interest. We do not know one day we might need this help for our own or one of our loved ones. If you are between 17 to 35 years old and good in general health you can be a donor. Fortunately White, Chinese, Japanese communities has plenty of donors but Bangladeshi, East Indian and other small communities don’t have sufficient donors. The process of stem cell donation is simply like blood donation process and doesn’t have any side effect. To be a donor of stem cell, you need to sign up in the website www.onematch.ca. After signing up you will receive a kit consisting of four cotton bar by mail. After swabbing inside of your cheek mail the kit. Your swab will be analyzed and the data will be saved in the global database. If your data matches with a Leukemia patient then you will be called for donation which could happen within the few weeks of your registration or never in the life time. Disharee is organizing different donor registration and awareness programs within Bangladeshi Community supported by OneMatch (visit www.disharee.ca Events). If you have any question, please fill free to visit our web site www.disharee.ca or call 647-771-8701, 647-860-6199, and we are ready to assist you to become a register donor.
