GREEN LIVING: WA HEMP VILLAGE NEARLY COMPLETE Hemp is used for a variety of purposes all over the world, but did you know you can live in it? An entire cohous...ing village made of hemp is now in the final stages of being built in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. We looked for an alternative technology that can be done at a commercial scale with conventional builders, but was high performance in every sense of the word, Project Manager Paul Llewellyn said. When we discovered hemp we thought, this is it. It ticks all the boxes of sustainability. Once completed, the 1200m2 cohousing project in Denmark will be the largest hemp structure ever built in WA. Industrial Hemp WA Chairman Glen Ossy-Orley said there are farmers in Western Australia eager to grow hemp and builders willing to use it, however the industry requires a local pulp mill to process the product. The Denmark-based project imported five container loads of industrial hemp and lime binder from France to build 12 houses and shared facilities. This is about demonstrating what is possible with this technology, Mr Llewellyn said. We would much prefer to source hemp in Australia, and in particular Western Australia. There’s no reason why we shouldn't be able to do that.
