As parts of our province are moving back to a modified Stage 2, and as our local community here in Hamilton continues to be challenged with rising cases of COVID-19, we’ve decided to take the extra precaution and temporarily hold off on providing those close contact facial services, such as beard trims and face shaves, that can’t be done with a mask on. If there are partial services you’re still looking for that can be done while wearing your mask, as always, our team will ...be more than happy to help! If you’ve already booked one of these services with us, we’ll make sure to still take care of you with a little extra precaution, but going forward we’ll be pausing some of these services until we reevaluate at a later date. It goes without saying that times are tough and challenges are abundant as ever; especially as we look towards the colder months of this pandemic. For those of you who are working hard to find your place back into the workforce, especially those in particular jobs and industries, we know it’s been, and will continue to be hard. As if interviews aren’t already awkward enough in normal times, Zoom definitely isn’t helping the situation (is my mic on? Wait, sorry that’s my room...m... I mean cat. YIKES, I had no idea I left that there , etc.). While you might be able to get away with not wearing pants, your hairdo might be a little more challenging to keep off camera. So, we’re hoping to help out in a small way for those of you looking for a new opportunity this fall/winter. If you have a job interview scheduled within the upcoming week, book your appointment, and when you get to the counter, or in the chair, let us know you’re looking to get cleaned up for an upcoming job interview. We’ll give you 25% off your cut, and depending on who’s working behind the desk maybe some extra words of encouragement, a musical tune, or even a little prayer (but sorry no high fives). Just show us a calendar invite, email headline, or something at least quasi-convincing about your upcoming interview, and that will do (we’re pretty trusting). While we don’t have our opening date quite yet, we’re making the preparations and transitioning from one world into another. . . One of our favourite little initiatives through the shop has been our Lunch Money for CityKidz program in which your choice to enjoy a local favourite, Lunch Money from Collective Arts, made a contribution to meals for low-income kids in Hamilton. With Lunch Money being phased out at the brewery and the Audio Visual Lager being phased in, we’...ve passed on your donations (thank you!) and will be transitioning to The A/V Club, supporting CityKidz arts and music programs when we open again. These programs inspire young Hamiltonians, especially those in challenging circumstances, to be creative and dream BIG about the future of our communities, our city, and our new world. . . Hello friends, Five years ago, today, our business officially started up; but with a seemingly backwards idea. As technology and social media continued to explode, we thought more than ever people might actually want to start slowing down and connecting in person again. Barbershops have traditionally been a place for people to gather, share ideas, and participate in a very human experience a concept that, in theory, couldn’t be easily replicated online. Well, this pandemic ...has confirmed one thing getting a haircut online is in fact pretty damn difficult! Although, the whole physical distancing thing has been a little bit of a curveball. Jokes aside, we wanted to say thank you for the outpouring of genuine support we’ve received and for all of you who have checked in with the team to see how everyone is doing. Like with everyone else, we don’t yet know when we’ll be able to open again, so unfortunately, there’s just not a practical, safe, responsible (or legal) way for us to cut your hair at the moment. Bringing people together is what we do, but right now, that’s exactly what we can’t do. So, in the meantime, if you’d like to join our WAIT LIST for when we reopen, please send a request through our regular appointment form on our website. We’ll keep your information handy, and as soon as we have some solid dates, we’ll reach out to set up the appointment time that works for you. The best thing you can do help us in the long-term is to take care of yourself, your family, and your neighbors, so that once this is over, we’re all able to catch up again at the shop. This crisis is affecting everyone in very different ways, and undoubtedly, Hamilton will be a different place moving forward, with new ideas, perspectives, and stories. As always, the barbershop will be the place to talk about it. Big shout out to our many friends and clients working on the front lines, the first responders and healthcare professionals that are out there taking care of us, especially right now. Thank you. In response to all the buzz around the wonderfully enlightened (and superbly written!) opinion piece by Andre The Brave Ramshaw, published by the @hamiltonspectator , I’d like to congratulate the few thousand of you who have also braved it all the way down to Barton Street over the past few months for the most risky haircut (buzz cut) of your life... and survived! . . But seriously folks, let’s not get too worked up and look at this article for what it is; a displaced Tor...ontonian aspiring writer, who ended up in Hamilton of all places, now having the identity crisis of a lifetime. You’ve got to see the ironic humour in the whole scenario, at least just a little bit. As Hamiltonians we know what Toronto has always thought and said about us growing up, so there’s no surprise in that. But times are changing and look at us now; the hottest thing in mighty Toronto is Hamilton. That comes with a mixed bag of positives and negatives, but at the end of the day this is our city, and there’s new guests in our house. Lots more are coming, some with a lot more money than we’re used to, some crazy, confused ideas and perspectives (our friend Mr. Ramshaw for example), @champagnepapi We the North shirts and all of that (#6ix), but there’s also a whole lot of amazing people that are moving here that have a genuine interest in learning about what it means to be a Hamiltonian, and making our city their new home. They’re all-in and genuinely helping make exciting new things in Hamilton possible that might not have been before, including new small businesses like ours. The last time Hamilton saw the Hendry’s Shoes Sign lit up was through CGI on the big screen in Del Toro’s (@realgdt) The Shape of Water . It was pretty cool when the movie came out because it was around the same time we started building the barbershop, and people would say, wouldn’t it be cool if you got that sign lit up again like in the movie?. Well on the last day of our campaign to make what we saw in the movie become a reality again (today), local Hamilton actor and co...median Matthew MacCallum ’s partner Andy came on board in support of Bright Lights Back on Barton. Matt worked at Hendry’s on the set of the movie when the store was temporarily turned back into a shoe store for the film, and Andy contributed to the campaign as a gift to Matt to remember the great experience he had on set. I personally thought this was pretty special, especially considering the timing with the build out of the shop, the movie, the campaign, and their story ... and it all coming full circle.
