Henry Tsang Architect 12.05.2021

In 2002, I was awarded the Monbukagakusho scholarship to study architecture at the University of Tokyo. I am thankful to Japan for giving me this opportunity to travel and pave my global career as an architect and academic. 19 years later, I'm honoured to be invited to speak at this international conference of former Monbukagakusho scholars, representing Canada among an elite group from 40 different countries, not to mention meeting the former prime minister of Japan Shinz...o Abe and greeted by the current prime minister Yoshihide Suga. Thank you Consulate-General of Japan in Calgary and consul Kohei Sakamoto for this precious opportunity. # #

On March 11th, we are remembering the ten years since the 20,000 victims and devastation of the 2011 Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. At that time, both my wife and I were still living in Japan and had experienced it very differently. My wife felt the ground crumbling underneath her and walked hours to get home that night. And I watched it helplessly from a TV while on a business trip to Indonesia frantically trying to book the next flight back to Tokyo. I took the photo below i...n Rikuzentakata in the Sanriku region soon after the disaster. It says "Rising Sanriku, Rebuild! This same day, we are remembering the 2,600,000 victims of COVID-19, as this date marks one year since the WHO announced the outbreak as a global pandemic. So, befittingly, today I join my good friend environmentalist Moussa Sène and disaster specialist Jason Jarrett at Hatch to discuss RESILIENCE, and how we move forward, but not forget. Lots of emotions, and a lot going through my mind for this one. Panel Discussion: "How will COVID-19 shape the future of work?" Date: March 11th, 2021 @12:00-13:00 EST Moderator: Moussa Sène, Environmental & Social Specialist, HATCH Panellists: Dr. Henry Tsang Architect, Assistant Professor at Athabasca University Jason Jarrett, Resilience Specialist, HATCH & Adjunct Professor at University of British Columbia Segment 1: https://web.microsoftstream.com//60a4f1b5-2722-4220-8a18-a Segment 2: https://web.microsoftstream.com//e8c3959e-2c4f-4f94-a5ee-5
