Heritage Hen House at Given R Ranch

It's cold. Really cold. Our coop isnt heated but despite the freeze, it was only -15 inside it this morning. All the hens and gentlemen are happy and content, eating extra grains to keep themselves warm. Eggs are collected hourly so they dont freeze. Birds are excellently winter insulated by their natural warm body temperature and feathers. Their roosts are wide to keep their toes protected and they tuck their combs under their wings like a warm toque. Their water is warmed so they always have it available for a nice sip too. Preparing for these cold snaps began in August so we knew we would be ok when they came. Just another way we make sure our birds are given the best care.

One hostile, vicious, raptor behaving broody silkie. Velvet really really wants to make babies but we say nay nay. She's being pestered, disturbed, and treated like a spoiled chihuahua until she figures out that she isn't motherly material.
