Another Baker’s Dozen today Glad to see that ‘almost’ everyone is contributing. Now if I could just find these dogs a job? Guard duty, and squirrel chasing just isn’t cutting it these days!
Mother hen with her little Roo, hanging out on Summer days.
Good Morning my speckled beauties The Easter Bunny never disappoints! Watching the snow quickly melt with high temps. Going to be 18C this week. That will make for much more ground for the chickens to find. Not going to say I’m thrilled with the next season that’s coming, Mud & Mosquito. The snow is so white, fresh & clean. I will miss my ice fishing, but will keep doing it while I can. ... Well off to the greenhouse, where it’s 28C and the veggies are growing fast. Wishing you all a wonderful Easter weekend.
Homestead Tip #1: When choosing a jacket, don’t count out those pleated pockets! They easily hold a dozen eggs in each of them. Tip #2: Don’t forget the eggs are there, and wander around doing other tasks/chores. Tip#3: Don’t bend over to pick up that shiny rock, or anything you may have dropped.... Tip#4: No running, no matter how many mosquitos are surrounding you. Tip #5: Tell the dog to stay down...no jumping! Tip#6: You should probably use an egg basket. Tip# 7: Get 2 egg baskets, or 3 or 4...that way there’s always one hanging off the hen house.

That moment you realize the bag of dog food you are carrying has a hole in it!
Before CO-19 hit, we had 24 couples interested in coming out this year, to take part in one of our tiered homesteading adventure packages - for ‘life off grid’ with our several different workshop retreats. The demand after this pandemic will be even greater! Many more people feeling the need to be better prepared. We are working on setting more dates in the future for the hands on, all inclusive wilderness training weeks. By diversifying our business, we not only have an ex...cellent place for your next fishing vacation, but also everything needed to make your wilderness getaway educational and inspiring. Check out our workshop packages to see which course is right for you! https://www.eliguklakelodgeoutfitters.com/hunting.html Share with someone you know who needs an adventure!
But what do you do with all those pickled eggs? I’ve been hearing all week! Well they last longer than boiled eggs, I don’t have to cook, or wait for something to cook. Besides just popping them in your mouth - you can add them to so many things. It’s a darn handy in between your meal snack! Potato Salad, Salad Topper, Packed lunches (where they last longer than boiled eggs because they are pickled). I always have them presented on my Charcuterie board, literally anywhere y...ou’ve used boiled eggs, switch it up! Since there are people still asking about the blog, these are the types of things I post there. Along with every aspect of our living off the grid. The first month is free, that’s right...it costs nothing! So if anything - sign up and you’ll have a year to catch up on this month, while you practice social distancing. I’m going to go eat my pickled egg salad lettuce wrap now. Gawd they are so good!
Dear Hens, how I LOVE you! You bring vibrant colors to our wilderness Winter life, in a blanket of snow with a blue backdrop sky. Each season the colors change, the older hens eggs are less vibrant and speckled, the new pullets come out with amazing tones of turquoise, deep olive green and deep pink!... Which ones do you crack first? They are all so amazing! Follow us on www.offgridlife.blog
If Chickens could send Valentines...
I’m beyond Olive Eggs, and into a whole new color range with my 6th generation Olive Eggers! I call them my new Camo line.
