Have you ever wondered how we can produce wine in Ontario even when our winters can reach -20 like it is today? Well the answer is on this can of (very delecious) beer... It's called the lake effect which refers to the temperature-moderation that comes off of a large body of water, such as Lake Ontario. ... Large bodies of water have high thermal storage, which means they heat up and cool down much slower than the air around them. This is what creates a cool breeze coming off the lake on a hot summers day (preserving freshness and acidity in the growing grapes) and a slightly warmer breeze coming off the lake on a cold winters day (thankfully).
