Prince Philip has left us with many fond memories of royal visits, including this one captured by Robert Benjamin in 1959 when the Duke of Edinburgh and Queen Elizabeth greeted a young girl in Dartmouth. Does anyone recognize these lucky children? #hfxarchives https://gencat.eloquent-systems.com/halifax/permalink.html Image Description: Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip greet a young girl in Dartmouth in 1959.

The woman you see here isn't the subject of our #MysteryMonday photo, but at #hfxarchives we're loving the look. She was caught on camera as City Works employees were documenting a construction site. We've guessed the year as around 1956, but can you tell us the location? We also welcome any more clues about the date, and about the mystery woman! As part of the municipality's Integrated Mobility Plan (or IMP), we're working to manage congestion rather than attempting to eliminate it completely. While more lanes may seem like a solution, more lanes fill with more vehicles. Learn more about how the municipality is Managing Congestion: halifax.ca/integratedmobility

There's some debate at the #hfxarchives regarding today's #tbt photo. Notes that accompany the 1970 Halifax Planning Dept. photo confirm that this is Quinpool Road looking east from Kline Street. You can see Texaco service station, Bank of Commerce, Cousins Launderers, Oxford Theatre, Quinpool Shoe Repair, and Restaurant Chez-nous. But when we look at the before and after photos side by side, we wonder if we've identified the right cross street. What do you think? For this edition of #HRMThatWasnt, #hfxarchives shares a 1963 map showing the south end of the Halifax peninsula and proposals for a North West Arm bridge and second Halifax-Dartmouth bridge that was submitted to the Town Planning Board. The map shows alternative bridge locations and street routing as recommended by H.H.L. Pratley, a consulting engineer, as well as the routing recommended by city staff. How would those bridges have changed our city? Learn more at halifax.ca/archives

As the old Mills Brothers building will soon be gone, #hfxarchives is using #tbt to share a photo of how the Spring Garden Road block looked 50 years ago. Taken in 1970 by the Halifax Development and Planning Department, it shows Basil Martin's Shop for Men, Mill's Brothers, Mahon's Stationery Ltd., Rosedale Nurseries, and the Royal Bank. For #WeirdWednesday, the team at #hfxarchives is sharing a proposed technique from the Identification Branch of the RCMP in the 1950s. This correspondence from 1952 (in the link below) details a new system for using sculptured masks to help witnesses describe suspects at the scenes of serious crimes. The system included seven masks which would be hung from string so the witness could move them as needed. Then, with the help of a questionnaire, witnesses would answer questions... such as "ear rim thickness" and "nostril openings width" and give answers corresponding to the features of the masks. Once this questionnaire had been completed with the help of a police officer, the questionnaire would be sent back to RCMP HQ in Ottawa, where they would make a mask based on the details of the questionnaire. This mask would be shared in searches for the suspect. At the time of this information being sent to the Halifax Police Department, these sculptured masks were still a pilot project, but they had been used in two cases in Ottawa.
