Lydia and Michaela Haustein are twin sisters who work for G4S Canada at the airport. They immigrated to Canada from the small town of Lauterbach, Germany, nine years ago and have worked alongside each other at Halifax Stanfield for the past three years. Here is Lydia’s story, and tune in next week to hear from Michaela. I am a Patrol Supervisor, which involves supervising and managing my shift, responding to any security related incidents on airport property including medi...cal emergencies and ensuring all safety and security procedures are followed. My job plays a big role in ensuring airport safety and security, including passengers and employees. Every day I get to work with people from many different organizations, and in a normal year, I would meet people from all over the world. Of course, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a major impact on travel and the aviation industry, but safety and security must always be provided. My favourite part about working at Halifax Stanfield is that I get to drive on the airfield and see the airplanes in such close proximity. I also like how every day comes with unique challenges and no two days are the same. It provides a great learning environment, where I get to work together with different people and grow, not only professionally, but personally as well. I believe coming to work and loving what you do ultimately has a positive impact on employees, passengers and the airport community as a whole. - Lydia Haustein (left), Patrol Supervisor, G4S Canada #WeAreHfxStanfield

Happy 5-year anniversary to our Therapy Dog program! We began partnering with St John Ambulance NS/PEI in 2015 and since then, the program has brought smiles and comfort to thousands of passengers, employees and visitors. The pets and volunteers are now an essential part of our community. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues and all volunteer programs are put on hold, they are sorely missed. We can't wait to see you back at the airport.

Although we can all agree that 2020 has been an unpredictable year, one thing that’s for certain is winter is on its way! Each year, our Winter Operations Team puts together a maintenance plan to outline our approach to safe and efficient winter operations. Over the past few weeks, they have been hard at work getting our snow-clearing equipment in tip-top shape for another season of snow and ice. Check out these photos of some of the equipment they use to keep the runways clear. We also want to give a special shout out to the highly trained and well-prepared Winter Operations employees who are ready for any weather event that comes our way! Thank you for all that you do to keep our airport operating safely and efficiently in winter conditions.

I am the General Manager of the Firkin and Flyer pub at Halifax Stanfield. My job involves a lot of multitasking and prioritizing on the fly. Whether it’s making sure the food is being prepared and delivered efficiently, drinks are poured, or tables are clean, my role is to ensure that every guest who joins us receives exceptional service. My duties have changed due to impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. My job has always been really hands-on, but since we’ve reopened, I am ...serving a section in the pub as well as carrying out my usual managerial tasks. This is how I got started in the industry, but I forgot how much I love interacting with guests. Talking to guests during this time has made me realize how fortunate I am and has made me empathize with other people’s experiences. I love seeing people at the airport because they’re usually excited about going home or, before COVID-19, going on vacation. I think we provide a unique atmosphere for passengers to unwind and relax before their flight or during a layover. We pride ourselves on being an ambassador not just for the Firkin company, but for Halifax Stanfield as well. The airport has a community spirit from the top down, and the people who work here are amazing. -James Ruddock, General Manager, Firkin and Flyer #WeAreHfxStanfield

To minimize contact and respect physical distancing, the airport terminal is reserved for airport workers and travellers only. If you're coming to the airport to pick up or drop off a traveller, wait outside the terminal building in the designated pick up and drop off areas. If a traveller requires assistance, only one person (wearing a mask) may go inside to help. Please do not leave your vehicle unattended at any time.... Did you know that October is Women’s History Month in Canada? To celebrate, we'll be profiling some of the inspirational women from our airport community. This week, we'd like you to meet Kathleen Legge. As a pilot and Director of Flight Operations for Maritime Air Charter, I’m responsible for the overall safe operation of company aircraft, flight planning, weather assessment, training, and more. I work with airport officials, air traffic controllers, and security and ground... operations personnel to ensure our flights are carried out safely and efficiently. One thing you might not know is that aside from corporate and private charters, Maritime Air Charter has been operating life-saving organ transplant flights for the province for over 20 years. I value working for a company that prioritizes our provinces’ people and their health, especially when I reflect on the unprecedented impacts of COVID-19. My favourite part of working at Halifax Stanfield is the constant attention to airport improvements, not only for travellers, but also for pilots, aircrew and air operators. HIAA puts consistent effort into furthering airport facilities and infrastructure, like runway and airside lighting, snow removal, and many other important aspects of safety and security. From my perspective, it's among one of the finest airports for both domestic and international travel!" -Kathleen Legge, pilot and Director of Flight Operations for Maritime Air Charter. #WeAreHfxStanfield
