Hilary and Janis are happy and helpful volunteers supporting our Meals on Wheels (MOW) program. Hilary (in the purple top) and Janis (wearing the vest) started helping out at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020. They are currently delivering Chinese MOW in Chinatown, one of the more challenging MOW routes. We are extremely grateful for their willingness to help isolated seniors in need, despite language barriers. We thank Hilary and Janis for their help and dedication to serving through our Meals on Wheels programs! We’re looking for new volunteers, especially to help out in the Chinatown neighbourhood. Please visit our website for more information - www.carebc.ca/volunteering
Thank you again to everyone who has provided financial assistance during this past year, including Lee Turner & Associates Inc. We would not be able to continue our charitable work without the help of generous donors.
Please remember there will be no regular Meals on Wheels deliveries on Friday April 2, 2021 (Good Friday). Meals will be delivered on Monday April 5, 2021. To arrange an extra meal delivery before the closure, call the office: Western Meals on Wheels 604-732-7638 or Chinese Meals on Wheels 604-733-6615.
During this exceptional, unprecedented last year, we have continued to receive donations supporting our charitable programming like Meals on Wheels - serving homebound seniors across Vancouver and Richmond. We'd like to thank the Boag Foundation for their generous gift. THANK YOU!
THANK YOU Bocci! This year the contemporary design and manufacturing company (based in Vancouver and Berlin) chose to support Care BC's Meals on Wheels program by donating partial proceeds from their annual warehouse sale. The company gives back to the community every year (supporting several charities with each sale); thank you for choosing Meals on Wheels! For more information about Bocci, visit their website. Please remember there will be no regular meal delivery Monday October 12th, 2020 (Thanksgiving). To arrange an extra meal delivery before the closure, call the office: Western Meals on Wheels 604-732-7638 or Chinese Meals on Wheels 604-733-6615.
Thanks Leanne for joining our volunteer team to deliver Meals on Wheels! We couldn't continue to provide hot nutritious meals homebound seniors without support from our volunteer team. Read about Leanne's experience volunteering on our website.
We're looking for volunteers to deliver Meals on Wheels to homebound seniors across Vancouver and Richmond. If you, or someone you know, can spare a few hours a week (weekdays approx. 11am - 1pm), please get in touch or view our volunteer application form. We thank all our volunteers for their support - we couldn't continue to operate our charitable program without their help - but we always need new volunteers to join the team. We have a specific need for volunteers to support our Chinese Meals on Wheels program in Vancouver. Thank you!
Please remember there will be no regular meal delivery Wednesday November 11th, 2020 (Remembrance Day). To arrange an extra meal delivery before the closure, call the office: Western Meals on Wheels 604-732-7638 or Chinese Meals on Wheels 604-733-6615.
Care BC would also like to thank Helen Shore on International Day of Older Persons. Throughout her career as a nurse and her time as part of the Nursing Faculty at UBC, Helen has been devoted to caring for others. Helen is also a passionate supporter of Care BC's Family Respite Centre (FRC), having witnessed the quality of care that clients receive there. Read more about Helen's story from our 2016 newsletter. Thank you Helen for your contributions to the nursing profession, and for your support of the FRC!
Congratulations to newlyweds Scarlet Johannson and Colin Jost! Instead of gifts, the couple requested that donations be made to Meals on Wheels (MOW) to support the elderly. Seniors are often a forgotten group, so their support of MOW is all the more inspiring! If you would like to donate to Care BC’s Meals on Wheels program (serving Vancouver and Richmond), please see our website. What a thoughtful way to spread the joy of their wedding! https://www.carebcfoundation.ca/donate-now.html
On International Day of Older Persons, Care BC would like to highlight a few of the senior citizens who have significant contributions to society, like Chris Croner. Chris has volunteered with Meals on Wheels for an astounding 5 decades this year! We last featured Chris' story in our newsletter from 2017 - he is quick to point out that he continues his volunteer service because of "the clients. I made a commitment and have stuck with it; I don’t continue my volunteering for the glory. Despite his modesty, we are very thankful to Chris for his service. Thank you Chris!
Earlier this month, Chris Croner visited our office. Chris is one of two volunteers celebrating an amazing 50 years of service to Meals on Wheels this year! THANK YOU Chris for your amazing dedication! We normally celebrate our volunteers during National Volunteer Week in April, but this year's event was cancelled due to COVID. We thank all our volunteers for their contributions, especially those who celebrate 5-year anniversary milestones this year. https://www.carebc.ca/volunteer-appreciation-2020.html
October 1 is the International Day of Older Persons (as designated by the United Nations). Coinciding with the "Year of the Nurse and Midwife" (launched earlier this year), 2020 both marks the 30th anniversary for International Day of the Older Persons and promotes the Decade of Healthy Ageing (2020-2030). Concern over the COVID-19 pandemic's effect on older populations is also part of 2020's theme. Care BC acknowledges the contributions older people have made to our society including the clients accessing services at our Family Respite Centre or through our Meals on Wheels programs, or the senior citizens who are continuing to give back to their communities through volunteering for our charitable programming. THANK YOU!
We have an urgent need for volunteers to deliver Meals on Wheels to homebound seniors across Vancouver and Richmond. We thank all our volunteers for their support - we couldn't continue to operate our charitable program without their help - but we always need new volunteers to join the team. Thank you!
Thank you Wendi for your help delivering Meals on Wheels! Wendy joined our volunteer team at the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak, helping vulnerable people stay in their homes while still receiving hot nutrituous meals as well as human contact. Thank you for your support!
Thank you again Stong's Market, Dunbar location, for collecting donations to support our Meals on Wheels programs - donations will continue to be collected until the end of this month. Your support ensures we have the resource to continue operating our charitable service to seniors across Vancouver and Richmond. THANK YOU!

12th Annual Fundraising Dinner & Auction: postponed to 2021 During this COVID-19 pandemic, we have not only had to adjust how we deliver our meals but also how we raise funds to continue to operate our Meals on Wheels (MOW) programs during these very challenging, economic times. We have made the difficult decision to postpone our 12th Annual Fundraising Dinner & Auction, that was originally scheduled for this coming October, to 2021. While we continue to seek out other fundin...g opportunities, this event was anticipated to raise 50% of the funds we require annually to serve our 127,500 meals to 1250 unique MOW clients. Whether or not you have attended a past dinner, we hope you will make a donation in support of our MOW program. Your gift will help us continue to care for our vulnerable clients so they may remain living independently in their homes. Thank you! https://www.carebcfoundation.ca/donate-mow-2020-appeal.html

Thanks Lisa and Paolo for joining our volunteer team! They started volunteering with Meals on Wheels (MOW) because they love interacting with people and riding their bicycles, while also believing in the importance of accessible and healthy food for all. Thanks for your help delivering MOW! https://www.carebc.ca/volunteer-profiles

For more information about financial abuse, the most common form of elder abuse in Canada, view the "Understanding Elder Financial Abuse" video with Pamela McDonald, Communications & Education Director at the BC Securities Commmision and Isobel Mackenzie, BC's Senior's Advocate.
Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), which happens every June 15th (since it was first designated by the UN in 2011). WEAAD is an opportunity to reflect on and to educate ourselves, our seniors, organizations, and policymakers about the realities of elder abuse in our community.
