As someone who opened their dream business two weeks before Covid hit, we have overcome some pretty big hurdles. Thankfully we’ve not been shut down entirely, but not having a dining room open for a few weeks, events being cancelled for our food truck and no Christmas parties and catering being cancelled has impacted us greatly. As we face another potential shut down with the rise in Covid cases, I find myself asking: with an economy so massively reliant on entrepreneurs and... small businesses (97.9% of Canadian businesses are small businesses), how can the government shut down small businesses because they are deemed non-essential arbitrarily by someone who collects a salary that they won’t be losing? Who decides that? My family is 100% dependent on the income from the restaurant, so it is essential to us. I know lots of small businesses owners worried they won’t make it through another shut down. What metrics are governments using to decide what to shut down? Shutting down small businesses and risking the financial safety of thousands of families is worth it? The depression, anxiety and overall safety of entrepreneurs and their families all over the world is being ignored by governments who keep pushing an agenda of fear of the unknown. I’m not saying Covid isn’t real. I know it is. I know people that have it and have had it and my heart breaks for those that have lost their loved ones to it. What I am saying is the financial, mental, emotional and overall well being of the majority of the population is being ignored and thrown aside for this and that’s not okay. Is the loss of stability of the masses not a form of a government-instituted pandemic in its own right? We have no control as the government decides what is best for us. It is affecting millions of people and spreading each day. I’m a huge believer in #supportlocal but what will we do when there’s no more local to support? See more
