Why do we mix our ages? At Highlands, our classes have 3s, 4s, some 5s, and towards year end even the occasional 6 year old! Why? Well, we mix our ages because it brings out the BEST in children! Our "littles" look up to our "bigs" and see every day what is possible for themselves with practice, focus, courage, and intent. Our "bigs" have the opportunity to nurture, to lead, to teach, and to role model, which, especially for youngest siblings, is a growth opportunity! Our mixed age classes are so dynamic and creative and even peaceful! (but rarely quiet )

We are EXCITED to announce that we are opening a third class! We now offer MWF morning, MWF afternoon, and Tuesday Thursday (TR) mornings! Kindergarten registration is OPEN at Highlands! There will be both full day and a.m./p.m. classes. For continuity purposes, priority will be given to children from the Montrose catchment area for full day because Montrose currently offers full day. Register SOON. Late registratants may be diverted to other sites. Where else can your 3, 4, or 5 year old: Create rainbow worlds with Grimms and Grapat Slide, climb, and hide on a wood climber Develop understanding with Spielgaben wooden learning toys... Paint every day Bounce, rock, and zoom on the gross motor equipment Dig sand, pour water, scoop water beads Play in the house/Santa's workshop/vet clinic/hopital Dress up in one of 4 themed clothing sets Hammer Snuggle in a tent with quiet toys Explore shapes, magnets and more on a light cube Read new books weekly Build duplo, imagine with little people, adventure with rescue heroes Enjoy a story in the listening centre Make puzzles, play games, experiment with loose parts, create art, play with literacy and numeracy toys at one of 6 constantly changing table activities Sing, act, and write every letter Count to 100 and practice patterns Be KINDER-READY! Our "graduates" are Kindergarten ROCK STARS! Highlands Nursery school is looking for 7 more children to join us so we can open a THIRD class!!! We have 28 children registered, with 4 spots left! After that, we waitlist until we can be sure a 3rd class can go ahead. The reason class assignments are not immediate is because some people who prefer Tues/Thurs classes were among the first to register. If I assign them a class now it may not be their first choice. In addition, later registrants may prefer Mon/Weds/Fri. The balancing of classes will be announced closer to June and I always do my best to meet each family's needs. I am happy to announce that all current registrants have been offically accepted to our preschool!

A CALL TO ACTION. Junes Delicatessen has been an important part of the Gibbard block revitalisation, and according to one source, they are STRUGGLING. We can NOT let another small business perish! They have DELICIOUS food and SUPER reasonable prices! So please: Skip the fast food. Skip a few starbucks or timmies, and put your money to use keeping this awesome business alive!!! Registration for Highlands Nusery School opens TONIGHT. Our preschool runs Monday, Wednesday, Friday mornings from 8:50 to 11:20 or afternoons 2:40 to 3:10. What's great about Highlands? 1) Two highly qualified team-teachers (one with 26 years experience, one with a Masters of Education and 25 years experience) 2) Enormous room with lots of light and space to play, including a large climber and slide... 3) Rotating activities each day and week, including 17+ separate play areas that are always available. Sneak Peek #2: An activity for every child. We have 17+ distinct areas in the preschool, and the activities in each area shift and change with the needs and interests of children. Scroll down and check out the photos with a description of each area and how we change it up on a weekly or daily basis. Registration starts February 12th at open house from 6 to 7 p.m.!!! We will fill up QUICKLY. Our current return students will already fill half of our 2020 spots!... Please share this post if you know someone who has a 2, 3, or 4 year old.

Sneak Peek #1: Arts Core. It's an important focus at our local elementary and junior high schools. This year we've endeavoured to dig deep into the visual arts, working with children on weekly art projects which expose children to a variety of artistic expressions including painting, drawing, collaging, sculpture, building, stamping, glass arts, and patterning. Our goals are: 1) To help children perceive themselves as artists 2) To equip children to confidently and effectivel...y use a variety of materials to express themselves (watercolours, crayons, markers, tempera, playdough, glass, wood, hammer and nail, pencil, paper and scissors, etc...) 3) To help children to see their evolving creations with the eyes of an artist (considering shape, space, colour, balance, contrast, symbolism/realism, pattern, etc...) Preschool Registration for September 2020 opens on February 12! We accept children who are 3 years old (or older) as of September 9, 2020. Our mixed 3 and 4 year old classes will run Monday Wednesday Friday, 8:50 to 11:20 OR 12:40 to 3:10. There MIGHT be a Tuesday Thursday class if we have enough registrations. Class assignment is based on a first come, first serve basis, with some adjustment based on class dynamics. Open house is the evening of February 12. You and your chil...d are welcome to come and check out the classroom between 6 and 7 p.m. I will answer any questions you may have. You may also choose to simply pop in quickly and fill out the registration form. The registration fee is $40 plus the first month fee of $175 (cheque or etransfer to [email protected]) The monthly fee includes EVERYTHING; all supplies, all field trips, no cleaning days, no fundraising, no volunteer requirement!
