Well, most of Earth's carbon is trapped in the skeletons of long-dead sea creatures (forming a sedimentary rock layer on the ocean floor). But the rest of it floats in a gaseous form around our atmosphere. Neither of those sources are good for creating life-forms. You can see where we're going with this.... Plants have a life-changing ability to absorb carbon from the atmosphere. They break it apart, and manufacture sugar and amino-acids (carbon that we can eat). The by-product is oxygen.
