TRANSFORMING CARE IN ONE'S LIFETIME What's in the elderly care? People age, and as they get to this milestone, whether they like it or not, agree or deny, they would need help. They need help in one or two areas, or in most cases, in all of their daily activities: mobility, cognitive ability, emotional and social aptness, even in the performance of personal routines.... We all understood this aspect of caring the elderly. No doubt! And, while healthcare providers are expected to help ageing people, sometimes, we wonder, how the so-called help is delivered. Was it done very quickly to get to the next assigned elderly client? Was it gentle despite their burst of behavior? Was it the kind of help, the elders preferred, or Was it what providers strongly believed elderly should and must encompass? This is the reality of the many pictures of caring people now a days. So too, Registered professionals' responsibilities in retirement homes, long-term facilities, community services, and in other fields were diverted to paper works, phone calls, administrative meetings, and other distantly relevant routines. Well, all these are still considered part of the care, but, are actual care being performed excellently? Or, just in papers? How many healthcare providers really spend time to listen to the elderly? How sincere those smiles were every moment they approached an elderly? When was the last time they actually had genuine encounter? Rendering help does not only mean doing things for elderly and does not always indicate exerting physical strength. Help could simply by being available for them, being a good listener to their wonderful, unimaginable stories - of war times, of love, of survival, of their becoming; being there for assurance; having someone to guide them make a decision (especially in medical care); being around to fade away that "feeling alone" even if they are not necessarily lonely. If the care providers truly understood this aspect of caring the elderly, then, people would welcome aging more fondly than worry about it, more trusting than swiftly fall to paranoia, and feel more at peace and remain dignified as they count the remaining years of their lives. Life experiences of elderly varies but what is common to all is the fact that throughout their living, life was not always easy. And, as health care providers, we have taken a responsibility to unload the burdens of the seniors - that once in their lifetime, they had tasted the sweet and gentle care, thereby, transforming their thoughts to a more trusting, a more affirming while looking forward to a better days...
