After placing our last (hopefully) seed order in this morning I had to go check out our tunnels. The thermometer shows the current temperature at +10C (outside was +2C). Après avoir placé notre dernière () commande de semences ce matin, nous avons été verifier dans les tunnels. On voit la température actuelle de +10C (dehors c'était +2C).

Thoughts that come to mind this morning as I read about Covid surcharges. Hair dressers, dentists, and various businesses applying a surcharge to offset the co...st of having to purchase PPE. For years, farms across our province have had to deal with additional expenses that arise from implementing basic food safety programs to keep safe, quality food on the table. Canada GAP, HACCP, SQF, Organic Certifications, and most recently SFCR. Beyond the expense of having to employ one or two additional full time people to develop, administer and monitor the programs on a sometimes hourly basis there is also the need for masks, gloves, sanitation supplies, purell, linen services, training all employees, etc. Then there is the cost for the auditors to come by and certify /re-certify the operations. I haven’t even knicked the surface of cost. I am sure you get the point. Hundreds of thousands of dollars. I’ve seen so many posts this spring with local farmers working tirelessly through this pandemic and jumping through hoops, which many were already jumping through long before. Enduring machinery breakdowns, Mother Nature, labour shortages... this list could be extensive. I witnessed amazing pivots. The farmers and farm markets, they went above and beyond. During planting season, they delivered the beautiful food to your doorstep to keep our famiiies safe and help flatten the curve. Then I see a post from an amazing, local, farm and farm market with their strawberries for sale. Fresh, local strawberries - grown right here in our beautiful province. And the negative comments begin about the price. I just can’t. We are beyond privileged to be able to have access to this incredible produce right here in Nova Scotia. Please move mountains this season to buy local and support farmers, farm markets, join a CSA. If the world locked down it’s borders (which is not a stretch these days) and we have no food security in this province because we have not supported our beautiful local farms, where will we be? Go to those markets this week. Go today. Buy the Strawberries - and if you can’t - move on. Don’t complain about the price until you have walked a day, and if you make it ... maybe an entire season in those boots. The price of the produce you just complained about, is grown by the same farmer, the same human being who would undoubtedly fill your kitchen with nutritious food and give you the shirt off their back if they knew you needed it. It’s really time to step up to the local plate. Our future locally in this province, and hyper-local right here in our beautiful Annapolis Valley ultimately depends on your VOTE at the check out. #stepuptothelocalplate #buylocalnow
