So! One of my biggest stressors, and rookie oversight was feeding my ewes proper nutrition... not so much the what but the how! My set up is in a former implement shed, so not super well designed for livestock and the cheapest way to make some pens was with some gates! Most barns or setups have a manger or alley way to feed grain to ewes so you can feed from outside the pen...but we do not... these feeders were sold to us as could be used for ewes but this proved not the case... very early on... getting swarmed with sheep was nice.. but not so much... ha! I've been getting grain to them in a round about, stressful, not reliable way for the past while, but thanks to my handy husband I think we have found our cheapest solution for the time being! This way I don't have to be in the pen, and can feed the amount I need to and know each ewe had a chance to get some grain... to say life is a bit less stressful today is an understatement! Feeling so much better that we can make our current set up work for us! I'm 4 days in to my first lambing.. it's been a great experience that's for sure. Learning curve is steep, but I'm up for the challenge. Today was a great day, with 2 sets of twins born over lunch! This morning we started out with preg checks for the girls! I was very pleased with our 46% conception rate.. this might sound like very little to some, but in reality this was a bit of a trial.. these girls and boys arrived to their new home (stress)..are typically short day breeders so were out of season and typically the vet said to expect about 30% without using cidrs during the breeding window..this smaller group also means a little less stress during lambing, I hope!! ..... thanks to Katie Thompson Teresa Ondrejicka , Luuk, Rikus, and JB for helping out! Confidence boost of the day! ... brief background here... I didn't grow up with livestock so this venture into sheep is a lot of "firsts" and new experiences for me! Some days I wonder what the heck I am doing and then there are days where you have small victories like this one! . It's planting season around the farm so that means I'm at home alone (with my toddler) A LOT lately. My husband has been helping me the past few weeks by guiding me and giving direction while I dr...ive the tractor to put the bales in, each time gets better and today I decided I wasn't going to wait for him to get home who knows when! No problem at all, bale is in the feeder! The spears are on the loader bucket so harder to see then just a quick attach unit, at least that's my story .. might seem like a silly thing to celebrate but I'm going to do it anyways! Say hello to Rosie! Rosie is not much of a sheep dog, but she is definitely curious about them. She's our farm dog, golden retriever x yellow lab. She's a spunky, high energy girl. Just over a year old. She looks beautiful and some how manages to keep her lovely coat looking clean, even on the farm! She likes to chase the water from the garden hose and gets very muddy from time to time but somehow she always cleans up nice again. She also loves meeting new people and chasing birds! ....Hope everyone is having a happy Sunday!
