Here is the Bison I was commissioned to do for South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem. I am proud to call her and Bryon friends. Thank you to Bryon for giving me ...the opportunity to do this sculpture for our Governor. There are lots of symbols in the sculpture. One of the first things people notice is the #33 on the cut out of the state of SD.....She is the 33rd Governor of South Dakota. There is a bronze of Mount Rushmore nestled in some pine trees on the hump of the bison. The longhorn cow has Kristi's dad's brand on it. There are some eagle feathers that represent our native American culture that we are all so proud of. I for one have brothers and sisters that are of Sioux descent and love them with all my heart. I also know that Kristie wants so bad to heal the division in our great state of South Dakota. Our state has so much history and represents so many different kinds of people. I chose to do a sculpture of a Bison because its a subject matter I really enjoy creating. Kristi didn't know she was getting a sculpture or that it would be of a Bison bust. Yes its sad the Bison was almost killed off but its apart of our history. We can learn from history and we can all get along if we try. Thank you to Brittany Schnell for snapping these great shots.

Bison fur is incredibly valuable for its durability alone. Their thick hides are designed to insulate and protect from the sharp teeth of predators. The dense ...fur that covers the hides have a thick outer layer meant to keep our even the harshest winter cold and a thin down layer for trapping in body heat. The duality of these fur coats keep bison protected and comfortable in the harshest of climates, and make bison fur one of the most versatile and durable materials for clothing and textiles! 14.000 years-old bisons sculpture found in Le Tuc D’Audoubert cave, France. The cave of Tuc Audoubert was discovered by the three sons of Count Henri three Bégo...uën on 20 July and 10 October 1912 The bison stood next to each other, built from the cave walls, leaning against a small boulder in the darkness. While they are 18 feet twenty-four inches long, they are beautifully constructed. The bison remained alone for thousands of years in the dark French cave until it was discovered in the early 20th century. The artist’s hand signs are still clearly visible and the techniques used to render the face and mane details Objects like these clearly demonstrate that man used clay for artistic expression long before the actual firing of clay was discovered.

Days are getting shorter and we have had some hardy frosts and chilly nights, elk are in rut with lots of bugling and the bison are coming out of it.

One aspect of our bison herd that makes us more unique than other public herds across the country is our active management of the animals. This week, our herd m...anager and other members of our resource team tranquilized this 10-year-old bull after noticing a severe gore wound from another bull behind his horn. Every year we lose three to four prime-aged bulls from rut wounds that go untreated, just like this one. This bison’s wound was infected, and maggots were starting to be noticed inside injury. Our team was able to clean it with disinfectant, provide the animal with doses of antibiotics and spray a fly repellent around the head of the bison to ensure the flies would not attack the wound, providing it time to heal. #HiFromSD #SDInTheField #DiscoverBlackHills
