St. Anne's Chapel-of-Ease, Fredericton 18.11.2020

This summer, we’re lucky enough to have one of three original models built by Bishop Medley in 1867! Coming from Maugerville, the model was used when the Bishop was discussing traditional church architecture all over New Brunswick. He thought it would be more comprehensive for locals to see a model instead of blueprints. For a full tour of the chapel come in Tuesday-Saturday for the rest of the summer! We’re open 10-4!

Chapel Facts: The Ceiling Inside the chapel, rafters made from butternut wood soar into pointed arches. Bishop Medley insisted that the rafters be visible; he felt this symbolized honest craftsmanship (youre not hiding anything up there.) ... The ceiling resembles the hull of a ship from the inside. The Latin word for ship is "navis" - consequently, the area beneath the ceiling was called the "nave" of the church.

Calling all tourists! This is the LAST WEEK to visit the Chapel for a (FREE) tour! Whether youre a local or a visitor, the chapel has something for you!... St. Annes may be small - but it reveals a much wider history: the history of the settlers, the history of the garrison, and the cultural shift which occurred as Fredericton was influenced by England and America. Open 10am-4pm, Mon-Sat.

Chapel Facts! St. Annes was the first Christian church in Fredericton with "free pews." To experience these beautiful, hand-carved pews come visit us for a tour 10am-4pm, Mon-Sat!... Before the chapel was built, all locals had to rent their seat in church. If you couldnt afford to, you were very graciously offered a free seat... on an inconspicuous bench at the back. Only pew-holders could vote or run in church elections; consequently, the poor were excluded from parish involvement. Bishop John Medley altered this system, beginning with St. Annes: "[No] church built during my episcopate [will] require the rental of pews. I see such a practice as being detrimental to giving worshippers, especially the poor, the right to take part in divine worship. [...] There is some opposition to this request..." (Hawkes, Robert. "Pew Rental, October 1845." Bishop John Medley: John Fredericton. Catkin, 2017, 31.)

Chapel Facts! The floor of St. Annes Chapel-of-Ease, displaying both encaustic tiles from Minton & Co. and rough, blue-painted wood, features a marriage between the exotic and the local, the beautiful and the practical, the religious and the political. How did this strange union occur? Come for a tour to find out! Open 10am-4pm, Mon-Sat.

Words from the Bishop! St. Annes Chapel-of-Ease represents a shift in thinking among the Anglicans of Fredericton. Influenced by their Loyalist predecessors, congregations previously favoured plain, bare churches. Conversely, Bishop Medley promoted architectural beauty. October 1853... "I have been criticized for having windows of stained glass [...] I do reject the criticism because I very much believe the beauty of the windows brings us closer to God." (Hawkes, Robert. "Bishop John Medley: John Fredricton." Catkin, 2017, 59.) Do you agree or disagree? Comment below!

St. Annes Chapel-of-Ease was home to Charles G.D. Roberts, "The Father of Canadian Poetry" and son of a minister at the chapel. "Frosted Pane" by Charles G. D. Roberts... One night came Winter noiselessly, and leaned Against my window-pane. In the deep stillness of his heart convened The ghosts of all his slain. Leaves, and ephemera, and stars of earth, And fugitives of grass, -- White spirits loosed from bonds of mortal birth, He drew them on the glass.

Chapel Facts! St. Annes is home to a triplet stained-glass window, created by the world-renowned William Warrington of London, England. The colours are extraordinarily bright and deep, and the glass is literally uplifting, as it directs your eye towards the heavens. ... The individual (and unusual!) images highlight different aspects of Christian theology. Moreover, they are placed in such a way that the big picture tells its own story. How did this masterpiece travel to Canada and arrive in one piece? What do the images mean? Can you spot the hidden letters in the window? Come for a tour to learn more! Open Mon-Sat, 10am-4pm.

"Whats so interesting about an old building?" Wrong question, my friend. Here are the questions you should be asking! - What does St. Annes look like inside?... - Why did they build this Anglican chapel, when the Anglican cathedral (Christ Church Cathedral) is just a few blocks away? - Why does everyone make a big fuss about the white gate outside? - How did Bishop Medley change the culture of Fredericton by building St. Annes? - Why is there a PELICAN in this church?! Come visit us (Mon-Fri; 10am-4pm) for answers to these questions!
