I am a passionate historian. As many of you know the History Check app has been a labor of love over the last several years. I’m happy to say that now that I’ve managed to stream line many of the processes involved in adding content, creating alliances and more, I’m getting to focus more on adding history and other points of interest. Some stories are just too big though, so I am also writing books of short stories that will be available online as E-books. When several vol...umes are created they will be put together as a print book. Stay tuned and if you’d like to be alerted, please let me know by commenting, or by sending your email via private message. The first book looks like it will include stories from around my region including: Mirror Landing, Rathbone Smith, Captain Barber, Treaty 8 signing, Treaty 8 Journey from Athabasca to Lesser Slave Lake, and the King Murder. (Subject to alteration as pages allow)

The Haunted Hotel | The historic Hines Creek Hotel is one of the village’s oldest buildings. Erected by Art Pederson in 1931, it has changed hands and shape man...y times. The most recent iteration was when Cheryl Lyman and her parents, Albert and Shirley Lyman, purchased the business in July 2017 and gave it a major overhaul. During the renovation, Cheryl would paint at the hotel late at night and hear people walking upstairs above her head. She says they’ve received phone calls on a phone that doesn’t work and the paper towel motion sensors go off by themselves. There are all sorts of ghost stories here, she claims. As the community’s social hub, the hotel certainly has acquired a lot of stories, ghostly and not, and the locals are happy to share them. Be sure to stop in and hear some over a pint the next time you’re in the area. For more information on the Hines Creek Hotel visit: https://mightypeace.com/places/hines-creek-hotel/ Move Up Magazine

Taanishi, bonjour, and hello all! Métis Week is a time to celebrate Métis stories, histories, and cultures in Alberta, and commemorate the life and work of Loui...s Riel. Riel is a celebrated Métis leader, a hero, and even remembered by some as the Father of Manitoba. The visions that he fought for, such as the right to self-determination of Métis peoples, extend past him and into the lives of Métis communities throughout history and across Canada. Riel once said Deeds are not accomplished in a few days, or in a few hours. A century is only a spoke in the wheel of everlasting time. Here we see two examples of Métis self-determination side-by-sidetwo spokes in the wheel of time. The first image is a portrait of Louis Riel in 1880, five years before his execution on November 16, 1885. In the next two images, we see two scenes from the Métis Association of Alberta (MAA)’s Annual General Assemblies In the early 1970s. The MAA was established in 1928 and is known today as the Métis Nation of Alberta. These photos were donated by the family of Stan Daniels, who served as President of the MAA for three terms in the 1960s and 1970s. These photos depict Métis delegates practicing their right to vote, electing their leadership, and holding their elected leaders accountable through an annual forum. In the second photo, it is noted that approximately 4000 delegates were registered to attend the Annual General Assembly circa 1973. This post was written in conversation with Rupertsland Centre for Teaching & Learning. Marsee and thank you for sharing with us the value and importance of this celebration, and bringing perspective to these Métis stories of resilience. For more resources on Métis stories and histories, visit the Rupertsland Centre for Teaching & Learning webpage at https://www.rupertsland.org/teaching-learning/resources/

Things you might not know about History Check: 1) it was recently described as the best travel app ever, once we get more sights loaded - and we’re going as fast as we can. 2) This app and concept has been developed from a kitchen table. 3) THE ONLY TRUTHFUL SIGN UP questions required are user name and password. ... 4) It has received 3 provincial awards, been shortlisted listed for a Governor Generals Award in community programming, & has been recognized by Alberta’s premier. 5) A single volunteer as built this from the ground up. We are overcoming all challenges this grass roots initiative has faced. When Mark Zuckerberg started Facebook it looked very different than it does today. We will just keep trying, and bring Alberta history, attractions and rural Alberta businesses to the masses. https://youtu.be/jA8r4VMW1wU

The third oldest building on campus, Pembina Hall was built as one of the University of Alberta’s original student residences in 1914. However, it’s 136 bedroom...s weren’t exclusive to students for long. In 1918 it became a temporary Spanish Flu ward during the world’s last major pandemic. Tragically, one nurse is rumored to not have left having succumbed to the influenza herself; they say her ghost appears only to men searching Pembina Hall for her lost love. Luckily for any easily spooked male students, Pembina served as a women’s only dorm for much of it’s time as a residence. #yeghistory #yegheritage #haunted #pembinahall #spanishflu #YEGScareitageWeek See more

Danny "Stonewalker" Lindstrom - Light Heavyweight Boxer birth date: 1960-05-04 Danny Stonewalker, who had a 1990 WBO world title shot against Michael Moorer in ...Pittsburgh, used to enter the ring in full Cree buckskin regalia. Stonewalker is three-quarters Cree Indian, from northern Alberta. His grandfather was a Swedish trapper named "Lindstrom," but, in accordance with both Cree and Canadian law, Stonewalker is considered a full-blooded Treaty Native because both his parents were Cree. *Personal Note on Lindstrom: During the late 80's and early 90's Lindstrom spent a considerable amount of time volunteering at the Samson Cree First Nation Boxing Club in Hobemma, Alberta, coaching & mentoring first nation youth of Samson First Nation. Lindstrom talked about the importance of giving back to the community. Through Lindstrom's time spent at the Samson Cree First Nation Boxing Club, Danny felt he was giving first nation youth the opportunity of participating in constructive activities that led a mantra of excellence in personal health & fitness, living a clean life, and developing self-control & discipline; by focusing on training and self-improvement that allowed the youth to vent their frustrations, angers, and life burdens in a safe environment.
