Retirement Feature: Blair Mackinnon Blair Mackinnon, field supervisor with H-Line Enterprises, knows what a hard day’s work looks like. His career as a linesman began in 1970. It was a family affair. Blair’s brother-in-law, also a linesman, grandfathered him into what was then F. A. Tucker. At the company’s peak, they had 150 trucks based out of Montreal.... Blair joined H-Line in 2000, following the collapse of F. A. Tucker. Recently retiring after 51 years in the industry, Blair has seen the electric power industry evolve firsthand. Bucksaw to battery operated. The industry has made a complete 180. The labour of setting and replacing power poles is backbreaking. At the onset of Blair’s career, poles would arrive from New Brunswick with the bark still on them, and crooked like a banana. The 300lb logs had to be manually debarked, straightened, and lifted into trucks for transport before installation. One thing that hasn’t changed is Blair’s drive and passion for a job well done. When asked how many sick days he had taken over the course of his career, he struggled to come up with three. The word ‘can’t’ is not in my dictionary. On the job, that meant finding a solution without shutting the line off. There’s always a way around it. You can’t be afraid to ask questions, he remarked. Be smart. Think, think twice, think five times. Something you do could cause a big calamity. PEI has seen its share of brutal ice storms. Blair recalls one in particular that left trees bowed into the middle of the road. Workers used chainsaws to clear pathways, working 20 hour days to get the job done. In a sense, linesmen are first responders to Island winters. Every time I let off the trigger, my saw would die, Blair laughed. The electric power industry is dangerous, but not for the reasons you would expect. The combination of long hours, adverse weather conditions, and high-voltage power lines create a job that is as high risk as it is necessary. But what linesmen like Blair fear the most is what they can’t control: traffic. Blair would recommend this job to anyone willing to give it a go, it's the best job in the world and it’s been very good to me. Looking ahead to retirement, Blair is welcoming a quiet life at his Hazelbrook cottage, built by hand as a labour of love. You have to see it to appreciate it. It was only 16x12 when I started it. It’s quite a piece of art. Everything I have inside the cabin is homemade, right down to the curtain rods. Blair will be back in February to support the new team joining the company and share his know how with their schooling. Being a Lineman, will never be too far from his thoughts. Happy Retirement Blair
