Naval Reserve Port Inspection Divers conduct an Ice Dive Training Exercise at West Hawk Lake, Manitoba. In our final episode, divers conduct a remote deployment dive. They reveal the location of the final pod by using GPS coordinates found throughout the exercise in hidden underwater pods. They transport their equipment to the dive site on snowmobiles, chainsaw a new hole, and search for the final pod. #OnThisDay, The Battle of Vimy Ridge was fought during the First World War from 9 to 12 April 1917. It was a defining moment for the country and is Canada’s mos...t celebrated military victory. The capture of Vimy was more than just an important battlefield victory. For the first time all four Canadian divisions attacked together: men from all regions of #Canada were present at the battle. Canadian troops also earned a reputation as formidable, effective troops because of their stunning success. But it was a victory at a terrible cost, with more than 10,000 killed and wounded. Today an iconic memorial atop the ridge honours the Canadians killed in France throughout the war who have no known graves a venerated symbol of the birth of Canadian national pride and awareness. HMCS Chippawa has produced our service online this year and were joined by several dignitaries including Minister of Northern Affairs, Dan Vandal; Her Honour, the Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba, Janice Filmon; Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister and Winnipeg Mayor Brian Bowman. HMCS Chippawa was proud to have Second World War Naval veteran Robert... Watkins provide us with his thoughts. A special thank you goes to Michelle Hammond for video production equipment and the Naval Museum of Manitoba for their support. We also thank Manitoba's Special Envoy for Military Affairs, MLA Jon Reyes, Councillor Scott Gillingham and other members of the Canadian Armed Forces past and present for their participation in today’s service. This award recognizes over 40 years of outstanding contributions, service and genuine support to the military, business, and civilian communities in Winnipeg and Manitoba. Mr. Leveque is currently a board member for the Naval Museum of Manitoba and provides sales and customer service to HMCS CHIPPAWA through Premier Printing.
