In an interview with Oprah, Maya Angelou shares the best advice she had ever given to her son. She states that it is important to be able to be a friend to those who you want friendship from, but it is doubly important that you protect a part of yourself from degradation or disrespect. Her advice has underlying themes of religion, and loneliness - but the message is clear: it is important not to lose sight of who you are for the sake of those around you. As we close off the semester, HMLD encourages our followers to continue in pursuit of either their academic or career aspirations, while remaining true to themselves and steadfast in their beliefs!

In a spoken word performance of one of her most famous poems, Maya Angelou focuses on the hopeful determination individuals need in order to rise out of difficulty and discouragement. Her words are spoken with a confidence that inspires strength and portrays power which has been reclaimed, a theme that is rooted in the African American experience within the United States. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qviM_GnJbOM

This week, HMLD is spotlighting Maya Angelou - a world renowned artist, poet, and civil rights activist. Dr. Angelou’s work has motivated and inspired the masses all over the world. Her teachings about compassion, understanding, and more importantly kindness resonate with us still to this day, and are sure to continue to do so for many years to come. Check back in with us later this week for more on Maya Angelou!
