ACCELERATION VS SPEED. I would say 86.7% of the hockey players that I work with say that getting faster is a top offseason goal. When we break down what it means to get faster in the sport of hockey, most athletes are looking to be able to get up to higher levels of speed more quickly - they want those powerful first couple strides, that jump on the play, the ability to lose less speed when changing direction. Hockey is a game of quick accelerations, shorter sprints, sudd...en changes in both direction and speed, and reactive ability. While some players need true top end speed, the vast majority will get more out of working on acceleration and change of direction work than from longer sprints. One of my favourite drills for working on acceleration for hockey players is the 1/2 kneeling start. The 1/2 kneeling position forces the athlete to emphasize the push phase, which is a really important part of developing a powerful stride. A lot of times athletes focus so much on the knee drive that they forget about the power that comes from finishing the full push. In this drill, Ras has to lean his weight onto his right leg until he’s in a position where he can drive back (PUSH) on the ground to move himself forward. Rather than taking quick choppy strides, Ras is focusing on finishing his push, hitting full extension from head to toe. Give it a go! #hockeybybiggie #finishyourstrides #hockeytraining #hockeyspeed #hockeystrengthandconditioning #hockeylife #hockeyathome #strengthandconditioningcoach #speedandagilitytraining #speedandstrength #speedandpower #hockeydryland #hockeydrylandtraining

Is it ACTUALLY that time already?? All the best to the guy sweating more than anyone else in the gym, Jake Livingstone, as he heads to Minnesota State University for his freshman year. The guy made the absolute most out of a short offseason - he put in the work, went through about 3 shirts every session, and made the gym a fun place for everyone to be. Have a great year @jakeliv99... #hockeybybiggie #hockeytraining #hockeystrength #hockeystrengthandconditioning #hockeystrengthtraining #hockeystrong #hockeyoffseason #msuhockey

You have the opportunity every single day to take action to improve on the game you brought last season. Every time you step on the ice, step foot in the gym or set up a home workout, prepare or order a meal, or decide what to do with the hours before bed, you’re making one small decision that will shape how you show up next year. Instead of just doing the drills, you can bring more intention to the ice, focusing in on the specifics that will help you improve your game. Inst...ead of saving it for the last set, you can bring more effort, more intensity, and more commitment to every single rep (from warmup to cooldown) that you put in at the gym. Instead of relying on coaches to give you feedback when you aren’t sure if you’re doing something right, you can ask them for feedback and get clear direction. Instead of relying on convenience foods, you can learn how to feed yourself in a way that will fuel your performance, improve your recovery, and give your body the nutrients it needs. And instead of just crashing on the couch for the nightly Netflix-athon, you can get the rolling and stretching in that your body needs to be ready for tomorrow. Be purposeful with your actions regardless of how far away your next season might seem to be. Every decision makes a difference. #hockeybybiggie #hockeylife #hockeyathome #hockeytraining #hockeyoffseason #offseasonhockey #hockeystrength #hockeystrengthandconditioning
