Holy ice balls! Ice can build up in your horses hooves. The warm pad hitting the snow in freezing temperatures can cause the hoof to pack with ice. This leaves your horse appearing like they are on high heels. This is hard on the ligaments and tendons in the leg and can cause tension in the shoulders. Putting petroleum jelly or cooking oil on the hoof pad can help prevent the build up. If your horse is shod, ice/snow pads can also help prevent the build up.
