Today for #selfcaresunday try to focus on cultivating your self-compassion. Why is it important to give ourselves the love and grace which is encompassed in self-compassion? Often people think that being tough on themselves will serve as a motivator which will push them to achieve their goals but research shows the opposite is true. When we give ourselves self-compassion, we are actually more likely to accomplish goals and improve the way we feel about ourselves. So try this... exercise. The next time you feel upset with yourself, take a deep breath and give yourself a much needed dose of self-compassion. Ask yourself, if a friend was in your exact situation, what would you say to them? Then offer your kind, caring, compassionate words to yourself. The more you use this technique, the more impact it can have on your life. #counselling #yegcounsellor #sherwoodparkcounsellor #fortsaskatchewancounsellor #selfcare #selfcompassion #growth #changeyourlife #healing #psychotherapy #holistichealingcounselling

If you hold the belief about yourself, that you are not good enough, not loveable, or that people will leave you, then there is a chance that you are subconsciously creating relationships which are not authentic. When you operate out of fear of not good enough or that people will leave, then you likely attempt to appease or please others. When you do this, you are creating relationships that do not operate with the feedback of your feelings and your needs for a secure attachm...ent. In this way, the relationship is never fully authentic. Working on combating that narrative, healing past traumas, and reparenting are essential steps to gain the confidence necessary to begin creating authentic relationships. When this begins to shift, and assertiveness skills are integrated, there is a chance that current relationships may not stand the test of time. That’s ok, the temporary emptiness is making way for relationships which are authentic, reciprocal, and nourishing. #authenticity #authenticrelationships #counselling #psychotherapy #yegtherapy #sherwoodparkcounsellor #youaregoodenough #reparenting #assertiveness #traumainformedcounselling #workontheroot #conciousliving #counscioushealing #holistichealingcounselling

Albertans are faced with another shutdown of many businesses; Schools for grade 7 plus have transitioned to online for the time being and the holiday season will look very different for many. At the same time, many Canadians have reported worsening mental health since the pandemic began. Over the next week, here are 5 things you can do to help boost your mental health: 1) Connect virtually: Although arguably not the same as in person visits, virtual visits with friends and f...amily can still help to release feel good hormones that act as a protective factor in mental health. 2) Exercise: Exercise helps reduce stress levels and increase serotonin. Many local businesses are offering online classes. Youtube also has a variety of fitness classes you can partake in. So make sure to get your body moving! 3) Cuddles: If you have other people in your household or in your cohort of 2 (cohorts for those that live alone) give and receive some extra hugs over the next week. Hugging releases oxytocin which helps to buffer against stress and anxiety and makes us feel good! 4) Focus on what you can do: One of the hardest things about a shutdown is the lack of control. This can be very triggering for many people. Shift your attention to what you can do in the here and now. Maybe it's skating, reading a book, completing a puzzle, or starting a project you've had on hold for a while. When we shift our attention to what is in our control we can help to alleviate some of the anxiety that comes from feeling out of control. 5) Get outside: The great outdoors is an awesome boost to your mental health. Taking a walk outside, building a fort in the snow, or even stargazing can help to reduce anxiety and increase a sense of joy and connectedness. For even more benefits, try to pair getting outdoors with mindfulness; Noticing the present moment without judgment. Give these strategies a try and see if and how they help. Mental health is multilayered. If these strategies are not helping enough, reach out. Healing is NOT linear. This is true. I've seen many healing journeys and not one of them was simple, straightforward, and only upwards. But those who have persisted have experienced some of the most transformative journeys I have been privileged to be a part of. So, if you're feeling like things aren't going the way you want, persist. You're doing great.
