Holistic Hope Anxiety Solutions 01.01.2021

3 Ways that PMS Affects your Anxiety. So many of my clients share that the week before their period, their anxiety symptoms feel so much worse. More heart palpitations, hot flashes, dizziness and nausea are just some of the complaints.... So what’s going on? What causes this? Here are 3 ways that PMS can affect your anxiety: #1. High levels of Cortisol: Cortisol is one of the stress hormones that is released during fight, flight or freeze, and you get a ton of it in the body immediately before menstruation starts. High levels of cortisol release cytokines which are inflammatory proteins. Cytokines can travel through the blood-brain barrier and create neuroinflammation, which you guys know, is one of the roots of anxiety that I work with. #2. Blood Sugar Levels: The second thing that can affect our anxiety during our period is our blood sugar levels. And this happens in two ways. First is because of the excess cortisol in our bodies. When cortisol is released our blood sugar levels go up, even though we haven’t eaten anything. In response to this, our bodies release insulin which brings the blood sugar levels down. So excessive cortisol equals excess insulin which results in period of hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia means low blood sugar. This happens when there isn’t enough glucose in the body to meet the brain's demand. It can give you that Hangry feeling and cause symptoms like excessive yawning, fatigue, irritability, dizziness, shakes, heart palpitations, sweating, etc. So those all FEEL like anxiety, right? So that is enough to make us feel extra anxious and even trigger the stress response. And side note, excess insulin ALSO creates inflammation. The second way our blood sugar levels can affect our anxiety is because of fluctuating estrogen and progesterone levels which affect how our cells respond to insulin, creating major blood sugar fluctuations. #3. Less GABA. Just before your period, something called allopregnanolone or THP, which is a metabolite of progesterone sharply drops, which affects the GABA receptors in our brain making them temporarily less effective. So less GABA. And GABA is a neurotransmitter that’s main role is to reduce excitability in the nervous system. Low levels of GABA are associated with anxiety. Interesting, right? And of course, if any of your symptoms are new or increase in severity, it is always a good idea to get them checked out by your MD or ND. A lot of the language around anxiety focuses on struggle. I often hear my clients saying that they just have to push through it, fight it, or feel the fear and do it anyway. It is so important to change our language around this. Fighting anxiety never works. Pushing through some anxious feelings may get you into the door of something you are avoiding, but it is never going to get you real anxiety relief. We need gentleness. Patience. And understanding. An und...erstanding about what is going on in your body and WHY it is doing what it is doing. Having this, can help you learn to how to sit with it and release the power of the fear behind it. (If you are new to anxiety, you can start here:https://www.holistichope.ca//feeling-anxious-this-is-what-) It is also helpful to learn how to use EFT and/or Somatic Containment poses so that you have tools to use to help lower your anxiety when it does rise. The symptoms we experience during anxiety and panic can be intense and are often automatic via the stress response, so can feel out of our control. It is so empowering to be able take back some of that control and bring some safety back into the body.

Have you ever heard of the expression Hangry? It describes a person who gets angry and irritated because they are hungry. Interestingly enough, it isn’t the hunger that is causing the anger. Those feelings are because of low blood sugar which is AKA hypoglycemia. Low blood sugar occurs when there isn’t enough glucose to meet the brain and body’s demands. It can happen because blood sugar levels fall too low or too quickly. Hands up if you are still a coffee drinker! People with anxiety can have a love hate relationship with caffeine. It can mimic a lot of anxiety symptoms like rapid heart beat, shakiness, heart palpitations, sweating and trigger panic. In addition to those surface symptoms, caffeine can also deplete important nutrients like magnesium, the B vitamins, and affect blood sugar and hormone levels. But many people with anxiety reach for it because they have such low energy and it gi...ves them a quick fix. In my early twenties, I used to drink a lot of coffee, like 2 pots a day. I would drink 20oz cups throughout the day and fill them with cream and sugar. When I started to get anxiety, it was one of the first things to go. I couldn’t tolerate it at all and all these years later I still can’t...and that is ok. It’s nice to wake up in the morning and not have to reach for coffee. To have balanced energy throughout the day instead of peaks and dives. So the key to doing it? Go slowly. Don’t go from 2 pots a day to nothing or you will feel terrible. Start tallying how many cups a day you drink and cut back one cup a week. Replace it with water or herbal tea. Once you get down to 1 or 2 cups a day, try swapping out for green tea. It has a small amount of caffeine but is filled with beneficial antioxidants. To keep those energy levels more stable throughout the day, eat more healthy fats! Avoid processed sugars and refined grains and drink at least 2 litres of water a day. Let us know in the comments below are you a coffee drinker? Or do you avoid it?
