I had the opportunity to interview Dr Marty Goldstein last year and now his documentary is coming out soon! So exciting! I encourage every pet parent to go watch it Here’s the link to the episode: https://itunes.apple.com//podcast/holistic-p/id1145721542
Something to consider before visiting a mass sled dog operation. *I'm not condemning the whole dog sledding industry by sharing this post. Just encouraging everyone to do some thorough background research before giving any facility your patronage. I am sure there are some amazing facilities out there that love and properly care for all their animals.
Excuse me while I ugly cry after reading this
In this week’s episode I had the chance to interview Nish from The Raw Fed Pet all about her research on preventing & reversing canine cancer using whole food supplements!
Had such an awesome time doing this interview and talking about one of my favourite things: adopting animals
Happy Halloween Let’s talk about something REALLY scary... Pet Food Regulation! Pet food is regulated on two levels, on a federal level by the FDA and on a state-by-state level by each State Department of Agriculture. That would make you think wow, federal law and state law, it's safe. It's highly regulated.... But that is not the case. The laws that... regulate pet food on a federal level are the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act ... [these laws] directly say a diseased animal or an animal that has died otherwise than by slaughter is a violation of the law [and cannot be used in pet food]. But...the FDA website blatantly says... we're not going to enforce that law. So diseased animals and non-slaughtered animals [can be used in pet food]. An example of a non-slaughtered animal is a cow that dies in the field, it laid there for three days. A truck comes and picks it up. They take that decomposing animal carcass, grind it up and put it in pet food. The only way to avoid this poor quality of meat? Look for human grade or your dry or canned food labels (it only counts if it is printed ON the label, not written on their website or used in marketing campaigns). For raw food you can call the manufacturer and ask if the meat they use is USDA inspected and passed. This was an excerpt from my interview with Susan Thixton. To learn more about pet food regulation & about why raw food recalls are on the rise listen to the latest podcast episode on iTunes & Spotify or read the transcription over on the blog (link in bio) See more
My vet said that this was bone cancer... [h]e said it was caused by a chemical preservative in the pet food [ethoxyquin]. It was used to extend the shelf life. At that time I really didn't even know what shelf life was, didn't understand really what it meant, and I called the pet food company, the largest in the US, and I asked them... what the shelf life was for this dog food. They very proudly told me the food would stay fresh for 25 years.... That moment changed my life. It was devastating to me to lose her and the thought of me giving her the food that caused her cancer. It just changed me. This is an excerpt from my interview with Susan Thixton (of Truth About Pet Food ) You can listen to the interview on iTunes & Spotify or read it in full at https://holisticpetradio.ca//why-raw-food-recalls-are-on-/

Z I N C _________ An excerpt from my latest blogpost: Zinc is an essential mineral that plays a role in cell division, cell growth, and wound healing. It is classed as essential because it cannot be synthesized in the body and must be supplied in the diet. Zinc also stimulates enzymes in the body and is crucial for a healthy immune system (1). In fact studies in humans have shown that "zinc supplementation decreased oxidative stress markers and generation of inflammatory cy...tokines" (2). While zinc deficiencies are more commonly seen in northern breeds like huskies or malamutes (as they have a genetic predisposition to poor zinc absorption), Kristin Clark (from Raw Pet Digest) posits that they are a "silent killer" for dogs of all breeds, ages, and backgrounds. Why worry about your dogs zinc intake? There are two main points of concern here.... 1. The body doesn’t have a way to store zinc so it needs to be supplied consistently in your dog’s food. 2. Zinc absorption is greatly affected by the presence of phytic acid (a substance produced by legumes, seeds, grains & nuts). The higher the phytic acid content of your pet’s food the less zinc he or she will actually absorb. Zinc deficiencies can create a whole host of issues in a dog’s body from poor quality coat to organ failure and even death. You can listen to the full interview by searching Holistic Pet Radio on the iTunes podcast app & Spotify. _________ Want to learn more about how zinc absorption is affected by the foods you feed & why deficiencies are more likely in kibble-fed dogs? Guilty. . Mostly dogs, but caffeine is a very close second. . PS- Happy Thanksgiving weekend to all my fellow s
On October 3rd he asked me what day it was . Guys, it’s Wednesday, October 3rd I hope you are all wearing pink and annoying everyone with a ridiculous amount of Mean Girls quotes. . Some ideas for celebrating with your dog...... . Dress yourselves in pink. Obvs. It’s the rule. . Spike their meal with some bone broth, cause you’re not a regular dog mom, you’re a cool dog mom. . Describe all adorable tricks & behaviours as grool for the day. . Spend time cuddling your dog, then push their imaginary hair out of their face and let them know how good they look with their hair pushed back. Bonus points if they actually have hair/fur long enough for this. . Snuggle up on the couch and watch the movie together . What’s your favourite Mean Girls quote?? Let me know in the comments!! For those of you who don’t know, I spent the weekend at the first annual Raw Pet Health Conference in Saskatoon. . I learned SO much and I can’t wait to start bringing all this information to you guys. . Dr Ian Billinghurst took us back 4.1 billion years ago to explain the origins of cancer. He also explained the science behind the ketogenic diet and how the body processes ketones (fun fact- ketones are neuro-protective & neuro-restorative).... . Dr Rob Silver taught us about medical cannabis use for pets and how the canine endocannabinoid system works. He also discusses how this dope herb can be useful in cancer, pain management, and much more. . Dr Marty Goldstein talked about vaccine protocols, cryosurgery, homeopathy, and much more. He explained that stress is the root of cancer, whether it is stress from diet, emotion or the environment. . Dr Peter Dobias stressed the importance of being open minded and striving to mimic nature. But he also noted that because we have done so much damage to the natural system, it is essential we supplement our dogs with essential nutrients via whole foods. . I’m planning to discuss some of the things I learned in more detail in the weeks to come so keep an eye out for that! In the meantime a new podcast episode came out this morning on iTunes, Spreaker & SPOTIFY all about how to create your dream dog via positive & common sense training techniques. . For anyone interested, the full conference recordings will be available to buy on carnivora.ca within the next week. See more
The giveaway for digital passes to the 2018 Raw Pet Health Conference is officially CLOSED! . I’ll be contacting the winners via DM for their info, so be sure to keep an eye on your messages! .
