DIY PERFUME How to make your own Signature Blend... Just like a choir sounds best with great harmonies, perfumes perform best when blended according to different 'notes'. TOP NOTES are the first noticeable scents in a blend, giving the fragrance its characteristic feature. Top Notes, despite their sharps tones, fade away quickly, making way for the middle notes.... The MIDDLE NOTES are considered the heart of the aroma and can linger for a few hours. Finally, hours after applying your perfume you will then notice the more subtle BOTTOM NOTES; they are late to arrive but have the longest staying power. The magic formula is to combine 30% top notes, 50% middle notes and 20% base notes. Notice that the top notes contain all the citrus related essential oils whereas the middle notes include many common cooking spices such as clove and sage. TOP NOTES (30%): anise, lavender, bergamot, grapefruit, lemon, lime, orange, tangerine, peppermint MIDDLE NOTES (50%): chamomile, geranium, helichrysum, jasmine, neroli, rose, ylang ylang, pennyroyal, sage, rosemary, cinnamon, clove, ginger, nutmeg, balsam fir, pine BOTTOM NOTES (20%): vanilla, myrrh, patchouli, atlas cedar, frankincense, cedarwood, sandalwood. Create your own formula but test it first! (We have testers at the Hollow Willow that you can try after sanitizing your hands!) Using a paper test strip, add 3-5 drops onto each paper strip and let it sit for a few seconds. Hold the strips 3-5 inches from your nose and take a short whiff while fanning them. You can repeat the test the next day to test the bases and get the "time-release" effect of the synergy. The simplest type of perfume is just your essential oil blend in a carrier oil such as fractionated coconut oil or jojoba oil. You can use a glass roller ball using a 3% solution (although you can go 10-20% but test on your skin first as some oils can be quite irritating). Remove the ball and fill with your carrier oil of choice, then for example use 1 drop lavender (top note), 3 drops ylang-ylang (middle note) and 2 drops of vanilla (bottom note). If you prefer a spray perfume, use an atomizer bottle. Add your desired essential oil blend first (3 drops are 3% in a 5ml container). Then follow with a blend of 75% alcohol or higher (most people use vodka!) and 25% distilled water. The percentages don't have to be exact. The alcohol helps to evenly disperse and preserve the essential oils. Essential oils, carrier oils and perfume containers are all available at The Hollow Willow (except alcohol!)
