KONG FACT The animated models had to be shot one frame at a time, with minute adjustments between each shot. It often took an entire afternoon to get the 24 exposures needed to fill one second of screen time. The battle between King Kong and the pterodactyl took seven weeks to film. This method of stop-motion photography proved to be a time-honored method of visual effects, and was used for many decades by other effects artists like Ray Harryhausen and Phil Tippett. What was the first film you ever saw that truly felt like magic? For me, it was this month's feature, 1933's King Kong! As a young child, that was raised by very Christian parents, my viewing of horror was extremely limited, but my mother had a love for classic adventure films such as: The 7th Voyage of Sinbad, Jason & The Argonauts, Clash Of The Titans and other Ray Harryhausen classics, all of which I loved for their elaborate story telling and top notch stop motion anima...tion. But it was King Kong, with the amazingly innovative work of Harryhausen's mentor and teacher Willis O'Brien that truly set my mind on fire when I first laid eyes on it. Brave adventures, mysterious secret islands, giant apes fighting dinosaurs, all pulled from the mind of a real world traveler turned film maker who decided to create the most exciting film audiences had ever seen! King Kong is a technical masterpiece, a fully original idea, and a true giant of the silver screen. It ushered in an era of film making the world had never seen & forever changed the medium as we know it. Join us this month as we witness "The 8th Wonder Of The World" Horrorshow: KING KONG!
