On this day 14 years ago, YWG was officially renamed Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport. In honour of this piece of Winnipeg history, we... want to share a little more about the individual known as The Father of Commercial Aviation in Canada. James Richardson was a visionary leader who helped bring Canada’s rich resources into reach through aviation in the early 20th century. After moving to Manitoba in 1919, he incorporated Western Canadian Airways (WCA) seven years later, which began flying supplies to mining sites and logging camps and was the first carrier to fly out of what was then Stevenson Field (YWG). Soon after, he pursued the amalgamation of WCA with five eastern carriers to establish the expanded Canadian Airways Limited (CAL). By 1935, CAL was carrying supplies, mail and passengers in all nine provinces and the territories. Today, James Richardson’s legacy as an aviation pioneer lives on at the airport every day. His name illuminates the sign at the front entrance and his statue stands tall on the east side of the terminal overlooking all airport guests as they arrive on the Departures Level. We are proud to celebrate Manitoba’s rich aviation history, and honour those who helped shape our country’s connectivity! // Il y a 14 ans, YWG a été officiellement renommé Aéroport international James Armstrong Richardson de Winnipeg. James Richardson était un dirigeant visionnaire qui a contribué à mettre les riches ressources du Canada à la portée de l'aviation au début du 20e siècle. Après avoir déménagé au Manitoba en 1919, il a incorporé Western Canadian Airways (WCA), qui a commencé à transporter des fournitures vers les sites miniers et les camps forestiers et a été le premier transporteur à partir de ce qui était alors Stevenson Field (YWG). Today, we pause to reflect. We pause to honour. We pause to say thank you. While we were unable to host a Remembrance Day ceremony at #YWG this year due to COVI...D-19 gathering restrictions, it was still important for us to pay tribute to all of the brave Canadians who served and continue to serve our country. A special video was played in collaboration with the 220 Red River Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron followed by a moment of silence in the terminal to allow travellers and airport employees the opportunity to stop and remember. // Aujourd'hui, nous nous arrêtons pour réfléchir. Nous nous arrêtons pour honorer. Nous nous arrêtons pour dire merci. Bien que nous n'ayons pas pu organiser une cérémonie du jour du Souvenir à YWG cette année en raison de la COVID-19, il était tout de même important pour nous de rendre hommage à tous les courageux Canadiens qui ont servi et continuent de servir notre pays. Une vidéo spéciale a été diffusée en collaboration avec l’escadron 220 de la rivière Rouge des Cadets de l'Aviation royale du Canada, suivie d'un moment de silence dans l'aérogare pour permettre aux voyageurs et aux employés de l'aéroport de s'arrêter et de se souvenir.
