40 Days with Dietrich: Day 2

Holy Cross Calgary 28.12.2020

The Holy Innocents [or December 28] The story of the Holy Innocents is found in the Gospel according to Matthew, and it is the story of an atrocity. When Herod ...the Great learned that the Christ had been born at Bethlehem, Herod wanted to do away with him. But he did not know the exact identity of the child, so he sent his troops to slaughter all the infants of Bethlehem on the chance that one of the victims would be the Christ-child. The murdered infants never had an opportunity to know Jesus or to confess him in their own right. But they all died for the sake of Christ, and Herod’s atrocity sealed the name of Christ on each one of them. The Holy Innocents are therefore considered the prototype of all Christian martyrs. (Excerpted from For All the Saints, Revised 2007) ====================================== Almighty God, our heavenly Father, whose children suffered at the hands of Herod, receive, we pray, all innocent victims into the arms of your mercy. By your great might frustrate all evil designs and establish your reign of justice, love, and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. (Collect for the Holy Innocents, Book of Alternative Services)

Almighty and everlasting God, you despise nothing you have made and forgive the sins of all who are penitent. Create and make in us new and contrite hearts, tha...t we, worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging our brokenness, may obtain of you, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. (Collect for Ash Wednesday, Book of Alternative Services)

As we hold our siblings and neighbours to the south in our thoughts, let us pray: O Lord Jesus Christ, who didst say unto thine Apostles, Peace I leave with you..., my peace I give unto you: Regard not our sins, but the faith of thy Church, and grant unto it that peace and unity which is agreeable to thy will; who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen. (Book of Common Prayer, 1962) See more

Many of us carry along with us a sense of dis-ease, or dis-location in our lives. These past 10 months have left us feeling cut off from the life we truly wish to get back to. Perhaps the story of God's people wandering in the desert may have something to say to us. Come, let us journey through this desert together.

How you respond to Jesus matters

Today the Church remembers St Jerome who is renowned as being a difficult person. He has been described as ‘extremely temperamental, sarcastic and had a habit o...f making enemies wherever he went’. However as a dedicated scholar and translator he made a most significant contribution. He is responsible for the Vulgate translation of the Bible. It was the first full translation of the Bible into Latin directly from Hebrew and Greek. Completed at the end of the C4th it became the standard version of the Bible for over a thousand years. What is often omitted is that much of this translation work took place in Bethlehem where Jerome settled to escape his opponents in Rome. The cave where he lived and sometimes worked is beneath the Church of the Nativity actually adjacent to the place of Jesus’s birth. On College study pilgrimages we usually hold a brief service in these caves giving thanks for the gift of Jesus Christ and remembering the influence of St Jerome on the life of the Church. (The modern mosaic in the cave shows the saint flanked by his companions Sts. Paula, Eustochium and Eusebius without whom Jerome could never have completed his incredible work). Deo gratias! Tuesday September 29 is the feast of Saint Michael and All Angels Saint Michael and All Angels celebrates three archangels who are venerated in the tradition of... the Church. Michael (Who is like God) was the archangel who fought against Satan and all his evil angels, defending all the friends of God. He is the protector of all humanity from the snares of the devil. Gabriel (Strength of God) announced to Zachariah the forthcoming birth of John the Baptist, and to Mary, the birth of Jesus. Raphael (Medicine of God) is the archangel who took care of Tobias on his journey. See more

The nave will look a bit different when you return to church on September 13 - the pews have been numbered and you will be assigned a pew to sit in. All the prayer books have been removed, but you can sign out one to bring with you each week to services. The hymn books have been removed as well since congregational singing is not permitted, however, you will be able to enjoy two hymns by our soloist.
