Omg...I swear Paul gets put out with all the fussing and prepping I do for the dogs! Big roasted trays of veggies to be puréed, golden paste, bone broth (which to be honest in my opinion stinks). It’s so funny when he thinks it’s for us and I’m like...nope...dogs! He sure stays away when it’s time to prep all the raw meat though! Lol. There is no denying it, these two are the sunshine rays in my life (of course Teeter too)! In all honesty, Paul is the backbone to my little business. He is my cheerleader and first to give high 5’s when the going is good. He seeks out new tools and ways for me to do things. He cuts wood, so much wood. He entertains my this or that inquiries on the daily, and he wipes my tears, puts on bandaids and gives the best of hugs on the worst of days. He truly is my better half. And Maizy is his sidekick. I can’t wait to see what 2021 has in store for us and wish YOU and yours many sunshine rays for 2021!

Let’s talk about salt for a minute. In 18 years of owning a dog I NEVER would have believed it unless I experienced it. Apparently, some dogs paws are VERY sensitive to salt. I just had my first experience of how bad it can get. While on our walk I avoided this clearly salted path (as I’ve always done while on dog walks) and suddenly Maizy dropped to her side, tucked her paws into her body trembling and started SHRIEKING. Despite my efforts, obviously, there is residual salt... around the area and tons on the roadways carried by cars. Wowzers, I darn near had a heart attack figuring out what was going on. I now know she is extremely sensitive (I suspected some signs a week or two ago but assumed it was cold paws) and will now look around for pre-walk salves and/or booties. And the best thing you can do is warm water rinses or feet wipes when you get in. Veronica told us a similar story that happened to Umbra (Mini Dachshund) this week too. I never would have believed it until I saw it just now! It got me to thinking though. Teeter’s response is a bit more what I’m used to. Nothing really. Obviously, no burning sensation for him, just a bit of paw licking when we get in. Which is not necessary good either. Without a bit of intervention (rinses and wipes) for him too, he is likely to ingest the salt from licking his paws afterwards and it can cause long term drying out effects on his paws. And when you are down to 3 every paw counts. In any event, we don’t want people slipping and falling on out property so what are the options? We use kitty litter. Yep that’s right. It acts as a sandy grit to give traction on ice and will help melt if climate is right. Sand! Sand itself is a good option to take the slip off ice, and of course there are a few good pet safe de-icing alternatives. Have you ever had a dog have immediate distress from salt? Tell me about it!

A few of my favourite things from the Millarville Farmers' Market Christmas Market! I can’t wait to put up the Christmas tree and hang the stained glass paw print! The soap is actually for me not the dogs, it was just so cute I couldn’t resist. And I foresee a lot of hand washing this winter! WHAT an experience the Millarville Christmas Market was! We really could have done without the fiasco with Maizy last week! She is doing so much better now thankfully! I am SO blessed ...to do what I do. There were many smiles and laughs and a few tears during our time at Millarville ...my heart goes out to those who’ve recently lost a pet and will be experiencing their first Christmas without their furry family member. Thankfully I am here! I’ll be starting to connect with the hundreds (yes hundreds) of people who signed up for custom ornaments towards the end of the week! But a day of rest is in order! See more

Remember we can do any animal (cats, horses, bunnies, hedgehogs etc) and pretty much any dog breed! These are $25 each and cost $2 to mail. We are happy to support Zoe’s in this endeavour.

One thing you may not know about us is that we feed raw. Every two days I put on my white butchering apron and get to use my fancy cleaver and I prep the dogs food. I started learning about feeding raw when Mr. Big was sick two years ago. How we feed now looks a lot different than when we first started. We started with pre made and balanced patties. Now I do it all myself..hack up and measure bones, organs and muscle meat. We’ve learned a lot over the years. For example Maiz...y is a guzzle guts and will swallow bones whole, so her neck and feet bones have to be chopped up into tiny pieces. Teeter hates his veggies so they have to be mixed in or he won’t eat them! Every meal we add oils, pumpkin and turmeric paste. I spent many hours reading and processing what feeding raw means (and yes parts of it are gross), but overall we’ve learned to make it work. It can be very overwhelming at first...I think I spent 3 months learning before I took the plunge. Do you feed raw? Would you like to feed raw? Mmm, love the smell of freshly cut birch! First we harvest the birch...then it dries in the garage for 1 to 2 years. Then we chop saw the rounds and let the rounds cure for a few days before putting away into bins until they are called to duty!
